points timing
I've done a quick search and can't find my answers, so...
I'm setting the dwell and timing on my 67 with points (backfiring through intake) and I have no idea what the initial timing should be on a points type ignition, I've always run HEI. (dwell at .019) Thanks in advance...

Re: points timing
Also, intake backfire is timing and possibly too rich, no?

Re: points timing
Did the points (.019) and timed it (8*) and now the dang thing won't start! I'll try again in the morning before class and if that doesn't work, I'll have to steal the HEI off my pickup.

Re: points timing
If it's backfiring, either the timing is way the heck off (verify TDC, plugged vacuum advance, etc.) or you've got plug wires out of order...

Re: points timing
Tried to tie her up this morning, went to NAPA and got points, rotor, and cap (spent as much as my HEI sitting at home). That didn't work, so I looked further. Rerouted and confirmed wires, confirmed TDC with valve cover off, etc.
Then I removed the even bank valve cover as I had heard ticking noises from there this morning. And what do I see, a bent/broken pushrod on the number 4 exhaust valve. Put in new pushrod and the rocker wouldn't lash correctly (cock off to the side if twisted by hand). So I (with advice from my buddy Jeremy, an actual GM mechanic) took out the pushrods and rockers for intake and exhaust on number 4. So my 283 is now a 247! Later talked to my dad and they had a 283 when he was a teenager go on 7 cylinders for six years and multiple siblings. Should work out for the next 2-3 weeks until the new motor and tranny get put in. I spent $70 on a free fix (timing light, feeler gauges, cap, rotor, points, etc). Oh well, good learning experience and I have a few new tools to show for it.
