automatic tranny shift linkage

hey guys, i need some help here. on my 83 where the shift linkage sits inside the cup under the truck, across from where the shifter is on the tranny. is there suppose to be a little plastic insert inside the cup so the spring dont stick all the way through?? i thought there was at one time, but there dont seem to be one there now and the linkage is binding up when i try to drop it into 2nd or 1st. if there is sappose to be a insert does anyone know where i can get one??

Yes, there should be a nylon cone shaped piece there.
