Barn find resurrection

Yesterday I started on my new project of bringing back to life a 1970 short step 2 wheel drive. Removed the box, then removed the engine. I found why it was in the barn. Can any one tell me what these heads are by the numbers in the pictures?

Re: Barn find resurrection

It was in this pickup when I bought it . ## show it came with a six, so I'm un sure what it is. I was thinking of using the heads on up to the carb on another block that I have. Depends what I have.

Re: Barn find resurrection

The 882's are definitely a 350/400 head from the smog era (1974-80) and don't get too much love as a performance head. I'd use them on a cruiser if you didn't have to put any $ into them.

Its a good thing the motor had problems, it helped keep the truck in real good shape.

Thanks for the ID help guys. It came with another block and heads. I'll tear it down this weekend to see what it's made of.

Re: Barn find resurrection

The 882 heads have reputation of cracking between the valve seats. Instead of putting any money back into the heads you might want to find some replacements. The 993 casting is a better bet for durability but some 441 or 487 castings would give you better flow/performance.

Have fun with your new project. It does not look like it needs too much to be back on the road.

They sure do...I'd steer clear of those. I got 993's on mine and love them. The builder told me they flowed very well for a stock head and he wasn't lyin'!

Re: Barn find resurrection

don't knock 882 heads. have used them alot in the past making some great horsepower. granted they are not the same as newer cheaper heads they are still good. slap some screwin studs and new valves and some domed topped 10.5 pistons and with the reight springs you will have a 7200 rpm. the 76cc heads are for the smog cars but can be built to be a very low buck continder. just my 2 cents.

Re: Barn find resurrection

That one shows to be a 77-79 350 2 or 4 bolt block.

I'll have to pull it apart to check it out and clean it up after work tonight. Hope it's a 4 bolt.

Re: Barn find resurrection

I don't know about the years but a 3970010 is a 350 that usually is a four bolt block. But not always.
