Newbie with 87 short step

Hey guys, im new to this part of the forum. Have been cruisin the 60-66 and 67-72 forums for my duration here. Yesterday i trade/bought a 78 Silverado 10 short step. Its got a 350 sbc with and i think a th 400, its an auto with 1 2 D the overdrive, so i assume turbo400, but not sure. Its got dual tanks, crusie sontrol, and wipers with the spray on the arms. Also has a billet grille and ralley wheels. This will be my daily driver for the summer and on, and it needs virually no work. ITs rust free and bondo free, and the only thing it really needs are new window seals so no water will eat it up. Have fun...

Nice truck!! However, unless someone did some major updating...that isn't a '78...but an 80's truck.

Centerbolt valve covers and what appears to be a throttle body . Looks like you did great and picked up a fuel injected 87 . Nice truck . Frank

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

the valve covers and air cleaner give it away, but the relay on the firewall confirm it, it has to be an '87. You've got a really nice daily driver and caught one hell of a deal too, way to go

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

Vin is 1GCDR14K5HF361662, and idk, i was told it was a 78, but all the stuff on it makes it seem like its not, lol. I was surprised at the cruise control and wiper stuff, and i was confused. Im not reall an engine person, so ill have to take a second look at all the stuff u guys are mentioning, looks like i got an even better truck than i thought. Right on!

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

It looks to me like you really got a great deal . Around here 87's are hard to come by in the condition of that one . I am sure that you know but just in case you are wondering why it being an 87 is a big deal , 87 was basically a one year truck . It was the first full production run of the the fuel injection engine and the last production year for the square body truck in half ton form . If you didnt realize it was fuel injected , BIG BONUS . A quick internet check shows an 87 1/2 ton with a 5.7L 350 . Nice find .Frank

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

Ye i just decoded the vin too, and 87 clearly. I do like the fact that its fuel injected, i just didnt look to hard when i bought it i guess. Normally when i look at fuel injected im lookin at a direct port system, so is this one just fuel injected via carb or elsewhere? Thanks again guys...

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

No carb , It is TBI (throttle body injection ) . Very responsive and realiable . No need to pump the accelerator on startup or anything . Frank

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

Yea tahts what i thought, but it seems like u still have to pump it a little. I dont know, im tryin to get the other tank to work (RH) becuase they hadnt used it for a while, and it doesnt seem to be able to get any gas from it so far. I only put about 2 gallons in it. But since its injected, i shouldnt bother pumping the pedal while cranking it cause it doesnt do anything while trying to get that tank to work? And of course the second i switch back it works fine, so i dont know whats up witht he RH tank...

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

Very nice truck! As far as the tranny, if it's an overdrive, I'm thinking it's a 700r4. Very common tranny on 87's...

Re: Newbie with 78 short step

84, lol, nice, probably tru as well.

Now i got a problem ,cause i cant seem to get the rh tank to work. Any ideas on what could be the culprit. To get to the back of the switch in the cab is rather difficult seeing that i have to remove vents and such from under the dash even to see it. Is there a way i can remove the switch from the front? Also does that switch just control the "junction" box style thing thats right near the tanks? And would there be an common problem witht that or something that i can look for? Thanks again for all the compliments and such...

O and how do i identify if its a 700 r4? Besides being an overdrive?

BRAD

Okay you said it has not been used for a while so I would think it has sentiment in the pick up tube. Could be an number of things tho. First i would check the rubber lines for cracking or splits that could be letting air in and reducing suction. Since it is FI it will have an electric fuel pump. The in cab switch activates a solenoid under the cab that switches between tanks. you should here it when you push the button. If i had to guess my bet would be on a bad sending unit and or a clogged in tank fuel filter but it could just be the switching system. I am by no means an expert but have messed with one or two. I am sure there are members on the board who can give you a better idea of what to check then me.

The tranny is easy.
Just crawl under there and look up at the transmission pan.
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cc/t.aspx?Page=8
or
http://www.chevcarclubvic.org.au/tec...tification.htm

If it is the original OD trans it is a 700R4 no other auto trans with OD was offered in these trucks

Hope this helps some
