Daisy Too! or "The best $400 I've ever spent"

So while looking at a variety of project trucks over the past few weeks, I happened to notice this truck sitting in front of an exhaust shop that is at my bus stop.

It's been there for about 3 months and the other day, a for sale sign showed up in the window. While waiting for the bus, I decided to ask about it.

Details: A friend of the shop owner bought the truck from the original owner in Idaho and drove it to Oregon 2 years ago. The column shifter got sloppy and he burnt up the clutch last year. It's been sitting ever since. Somewhere along the line, he lost the title and decided he was tired of looking at it.

The shop owner says:

"Give me $400 and it's yours."

I used my hand to get it into 2nd gear and nursed it home today after work, I am blown away at how well it runs! 98k original miles and minus the rocker panels, it is rust free and only one ding in the passenger bed corner.

This Weekend:
I found a tailgate on Craig's List that I am getting this weekend. I also bought a Hurst 3 speed to install on the floor. There is a passenger window at the JY for $20 and I need to install a clutch. It will be fully drivable by Monday if the weather holds.

The gas gauge doesn't work, so it looks like it's a storage location.

My '69 was the same color when I bought it and my daughter (who was 5 then) said "It looks like a daisy" the day I brought it home. She gave me a lot of grief when I sold it, so she was happy to see that the "new" 1971 truck is damn near the exact same as a starting point.

Very cool project! I also swapped in a 6.2L into my 1970 chevy....but I just took it out, too. I had problems with the guy who was doing the install. It took him 6 months to get the damn thing in its new home. Plus, he wanted to charge me crazy prices for wire the thing up. Eventually I became frustrated with the whole thing, and I told him to take the motor out of the truck. You will run into one problem that I am aware of...maybe...the AC will hit the hydroboost setup. Also, buy a 6.2 or 6.5 with the front drive assy complete. That will save you lots of money in the long run. I am now looking for a new 6.2 or 6.5.

David, thanks for the tip. My goal is to find an 88+ complete, but an 85 (first year of the better rockers) with v-belts wouldn't be a bad second choice. I am either tossing the A/C or converting it to be an air pump for my bags. Most likely I will use the A/C delete pulley and forget the hassle. There are also a lot of military 6.2's on the market that might work if anyone can figure out if they are coarse or fine thread injectors.

Steven, thanks again for the shifter. I am installing it this weekend to see if I can get the current setup functional.

I bought the super redneck '71, but I ended up spending WAY too much time/money/energy undoing all the crap that others had done over the years. I don't need a 4x4 and I missed the street truck, so I sold it last year with the hopes of building this.

The bio-diesel conversion was the one major element the other truck was missing. I also learned a lot doing the air ride setup last time, so I have a better plan going into it this time around.

I'll be watching your thread, I am interested in the 6.2/5 swap as well. A guy just south of me sells the hummer take-outs with 15-20,00 Miles on them pretty reasonable. I just don't know what else I would need to swap.

What does one do with a truck with no title besides use it for parts? Here in PA we have salvage titles but they can be a pain to get unless you have a lein on the car. I know most states will not accept our salvage title for transfer.

The shop I bought it from put a lien on it and sold it to me "at auction" according to the paperwork. There are companies here that for $40 set up all the lien paperwork for you and all you have to do is sign.

The only issue now is because it's an out of state truck, I have to bring it in for a VIN inspection before I get a title. Since it isn't running currently, that means waiting until it is.

I bought a 6.2L complete from fan to flex plate for $400 of Craig's List and sold my 307 yesterday. On Thursday I will pull the 307 and send it on it's way then drop the 6.2 on the engine stand for some clean up and prep.

With any luck, the first week of September I will have the engine ready to install. I have the whole week off, so the engine will at least go into the clean and prepped bay.

Starting to clean up the "new":



A lot of clean up work to do, but it looks to be mostly there.

I pulled all the wires off, the old hoses, and the accessories. I will degrease it and power wash it this week and look for any serious issues.

The first thing I noticed was the dip stick is doubled over from the harsh removal process. The AC lines and power steering lines have been cut as well.

The goal is to gut the AC pump and convert it to be an air compressor for the air ride system that will go in once the motor is squared up.
