Hey all. I went to change the axles on my '68 rear and started to take the bolt out that holds the pin in place. Mine was so easy to take out I thought I had it easy. Needless to say when I removed the bolt and it was only 1/2" long I realized that it had broken at some point in it's life. Well after a couple of days I have finally removed the rest of the bolt without damaging any threads (thank goodness). Now I need a replacement bolt, but chevy doesn't have a part number for me. You know the bolt I'm talking about. Threaded on top and a smooth shaft on the bottom part, about 2" long. Any idea on the part number and where I can possibly get a replacement? Thanks in advance.

Glad it came out, lets see the picts!! I'd just go to a wrecking yard, they will have junk axles to pull one out of, or possiblyGM (get in their paper catalogs).

What pics would you like mike?
Pics of the disaster I have created?
Perhaps pics of the tool and the bolt (complete with easy put still in it)?
Or possibly the rear end and where the bolt should go?
I don't know where the top part of the bolt is, I think I threw it far far away!

As bad as that one where the guy cut the carrier near in half, your's seems tame!! He needs the bolt that holds the shaft in, they one that goes in the hole!

BTW Mike,
The axles still didn't come out after removing the pin. They would not push in far enough to drop the c-clip. I ended up using and air hammer between the backing plate and the drum, and running it around the outside. Putting chisels in the gap as I made my way around the circumference of the drum. I'm glad I stood on the other side, because when it finally popped off it flew about 6 feet. THen the other side popped right off without as much effort. Go figure.

Just a heads up. The bolt is different on a non-posi vs a posi.

I saw some of those bolts at Napa, hanging on one of those racks you can rotate. not sure what applications they have

Seriously, out of all this style of rear ends(Danas, GMs and some Fords)that Ive rebuilt/taken apart, about 20% of them had broken bolts, its not that uncommon. You did it the right way for sure, Ive seen some pretty nasty stuff done is attempt to remove the broken off portion of the bolt. I think its called a differential pinion shaft retainer bolt, and if Im not mistaken alot of them are interchangeable(a dana one will work in a GM or a Ford etc.).

What are we calling this part?A differential carrier center pin?I can look it up if I know what it`s called.But,there`s no pictures.Or,maybe there is.Let me check the parts book and get back.Isn`t it known as the center pin?

It's call a "Pinion Shaft Lock Screw. If you have a posi, the part number is 3830672, non-posi is 472546. The thread size is 5/16"x18. Can't give you the length. Hope this helps....
