The Last Run In My Highlander

I ran to Bill Athey`s today for one more ride in my Highlander.I deliver the truck to it`s new owner tomorrow.I really enjoyed the truck and will miss it,I know. She worked hard for me and treated me good during my time with her.Just a good ole truck.I had a guy that wanted it for over a year and I kept getting cold feet, taking a step back. The right guy made an offer and the timing was right.
The bridge over the North Fork of the Shennendoah was closed due to an accident. So,I detoured down 55 to Stasburg and looped around.AsI passed along Massanutten Mountain I decided to pull of for a shot and here it is:

Last weekend me and Olblue60 went down and got a load of parts.Astorm ran us into Bill`s store, then we went for it.It cleared on the way home and we stopped to check this antique shop I always pass and always wanted to stop and check out. It`s been closed for a while and is in suspended animation with everything laying where it was the last day of business.I can only wonder what the story is.
Here`s the truck at Bill`s.I went to get some of his used stuff.Couldn`t find a thing I needed..."cool:

LOL it's been a while since I smoked a Camel, but I dont remember them being mild.

I sold my 70 GMC last year...and I really miss it (my ole Blue) so I can empathize with your loss..even if it's the thing to do...kinda like getting a root canal...you know you need to...but ...Ouch!

I'm sure you'll have another one before you know it. I've always liked that truck myself. Those are some cool pics of the antique shop. It's hard to believe all those old signs haven't walked off.

Re: The Last Run In My Highlander

Good pun....NOT!! Just kidding. That`s where the name comes from, when I had three K20/2500s that were all special order trucks loaded with options.Started of as Super-K,for the CheyenneSuper CustomCamper...now gone. When I got this computer I switched e-mail providers and it was a pain because my e-mail didn`t match.I`m still Super-K on CK5.com and prolly still on the member`s list here.Oops!

Asa,that`s exactly what we were thinking. There`s bottles just sitting there. On one sill is a big old Planters Peanut store counter jar and all kinds of loose stuff. It`s along US340,too.I think it`s the guy next store with the cap and traler business` folk`s place and they live out back.I should have stopped by yesterday and popped another matching hubcap I got from Bill on that panel.I didn`t think about until I posted this last night.I`m crazy like that.I`d rather add to the scene than take something away.Ya dig?Maybe a touch of anal in there somewhere, too.

I sold it to a guy who is a member that lives near me.He`s not about spending alot of time on here.He actually works on this stuff! I`ll let him speak for what he paid,if he wants. No big secret,I had it posted in my signature for a month or so.He bought it from me working at his house.Another guy was trying to buy it for over a year. But,I kept avoiding it and really didn`t want it in this guy`s hands.I`m funny about where my trucks go when I sell them. The other guy just wanted it because it was a big 4wd and decided he likes the body style...along with another million people here lately.Jason knows what he`s got, bought it for that reason, and will take her from where I left off. He`s a talented guy the tears into stuff whenever he can. He`s got some fine pieces. The other guy made me feel like taking off 1/2 the options because he wouldn`t have known the difference or cared. He was a friend of a friend.I figured he`d run out and toss some blingy 20s on there, first thing and complain about any problem that came up after he bought the 36 year old truck.Jason plans to do exactly what I had planned, wheel wise.Hell be putting 9.75x16.5 OEM-type wheels with hubcaps and CUCV axles making it a factory-looking`72 CustomDeluxe K/30.Those white spokes were on there until I restored the truck and for my hiway/beach set of tires.I have 37" superSwampers and 9.75x16.5 OEM-types that will go one my short/step`71 K/30 project.

I can thank a happy *single biker chick down in Daytona for my parting with this gem.Insert bitter icon of your liking. How about this one...

*my crazy wife/son`s mom

Re: The Last Run In My Highlander

Me too. That truck would be an easy resto.Yet,there`s something about it that makes you want to leave it "as is" as long as possible. Not everyone can appreciate anything less than a cherry old hauler. It`s a truck thing. If I had to explain, you wouldn`t understand .He`s talking like he`s leaving it as a bumparound hauler, too. The messed up trim bugs me and I have the lower moulding for the gate.Just never put it on.He has factory hooks, front AND REAR!!He`ll probably fix the rust and spot paint. We`ll see.

Thumbs up Re: The Last Run In My Highlander

Tim,
i totally understand the "leave it as is" thing. i've built a few really nice trucks/cars in my time and always ended up selling them because i would'nt use the for their intended purpose. my old super would look nice restored--i have most all the stuff to do it too--but then i'd be afraid to use it as a truck.

Re: The Last Run In My Highlander

When I got back to town,it was Cruise-in night at the Jimmy Cone.I could barely find a parking spot at the opposite end of the shopping center lot to get my beer.I cruised through and no one hardly looked, like it was an old redneck beater.Eh...pretty good hunch, but if I saw this truck in it`s state (for around here) just being used as justa truck as if it had survived 37 years that well and full of 67-72 parts I would have missed my mouth with my Jimmy Cone. I`m not really into the cruise-in scene anymore. At least not in my town.Something about the`tudes around here with all the buy-in newbies. This little town has quadroopled in size with all these suburbanites.I guess after being down in ole Virginny they were hard to take.I just wanted to get my dang BEER!!Maybe I`m the one with a tude. The guy at the beer store made a comment about how they are all "bought" cars and I said,"Yeah,I was building and restoring stuff when those guys were drivin` Datsuns." It takes an educated guy to know see through the "less than perfect".It`s a rat rod, man.

Re: The Last Run In My Highlander

Actually, this wasn`t the last run,as it turns out.I have a Dana44 front axle in there I picked up last week that is for OLDCHEV4X4 (Randy).I am working on the buyer,Jason`s,house and was going to meet OLDCHEV at Jason`s to deliver the axle and truck, then get a ride back home yesterday. The man-made stone that I ordered for Jason`s came in to Lowe`s,so I stopped and loaded that for one last haul up to my last minute with it.Well, things didn`t work out with us all getting together.I loaded the stone by the time we knew it wasn`t happening. So,I decided to turn back home and do things with the rest of Sunday since I`m working up there today.So...today,I get to haul one more load right up to handing over the title.
It`s like we can`t seperate.I only owned it four years, but it was a good truck after a rough start and I`ll sure miss it.
