64 V-8 engine Color?!!??!!

I'm going through my early 70's 350 that's going into my 64 c10. I've heard everyone quote about every color under the rainbow for what color the stock V-8s were in 64, from orange, blue, green and gray. Which is it and where can I get the paint, and I will be spraying the motor so, no bomb can or brush on stuff here.

Thanks!

My vote is Chevrolet Engine Orange

The link Rogue 64 gave is right on. The 283 pictured is 100% correct for 64-66 trucks. It does have many rare options including the air filter.

The 283 in my 64 is a dark gloss gray. You can still see it very well on the valve covers. (still has the "High Torque 283" sticker) It looks noticeably darker than that picture of the 65 in the link. That 65 engine looks cool with that color though.

Can you post some pictures? This kind of factory documentation is what true restorers need to know, but it's very hard to find...

Guess the pic I found with Chevy Orange is a bit off, eh?!

I'd like to see pics of the whole truck. Inside and out.

Wow, a lower mileage, unmolested C-10! 8)

Tony (lilred66) has a vast collection of official Chevrolet literature for the 64-66's. He might have something in his archives to help you out. So if I were you I'd hit him up

Re: 64 V-8 engine Color?!!??!!

Here are some pictures of the engine and the only spot with good paint on it. The engine is not much to look at but is about 90% original. Most all of the hose clamps are wrong. The breather has been replaced. The original alternator should have a bigger pulley. I still have the original alternator too. Battery hold down is missing and the washer bottle and heater core have been changed too but that is about it I think.

Re: 64 V-8 engine Color?!!??!!

Chevrolet calls the engine color gray for the 283, but it does have a grayish-blue tint to it. I doubt if anyone reproduces the exact shade, but having an engine painted gray would satisfy me.The decal seems to be in the wrong place, but it might have been put the for publicity purposes. This is an original photo not a restoration photo.

Re: 64 V-8 engine Color?!!??!!

I have been wondering which way the air cleaner snorkel is supposed to face. I will check and see if it clears the a/c compressor.

What other year trucks should have the gray painted V8?

My 1964 owners guide says:

153 L-4 Gray
230 L-6 Blue
292 L-6 Green
283 V-8 Gray
327 V-8 Green
348 V-8 Gray
409 V-8 Gray (w/silver rocker covers)
4-53 Diesel Green
6V-53 Diesel Green

I have never seen a picture of a Green engined truck ever!
I can't find any Gray engine pictures in my color photo book.

factorystock,

That picture of the 283 looks more blue than gray but I guess the photo just makes it look that way. The red looks kind of overly bright too.

Re: 64 V-8 engine Color?!!??!!

I believe that green to be the correct color for the 250 in '66 also.

THis is the closest color I could find at the time, but I have found some Detroit Diesel green that might be closer. If I ever hav eht motor out again, I might try it.

Nice engine, Curt. You need a TarTopper battery cover & some spring end battery cables to get "the look"!
My Buick 425 is about that same color, I think.

Looks like original paint on the oil pan and rocker covers with a short block installed at some time. Same color gray as my 64 283

block numbers and internal gunk match the year... I'd be inclined to say the block paint were original, as delivered...but am not positive.

Thanks,

Those would be excellent ideas. I'll have to consider them.

Snailracing, I suspect the color of the motor could change a bit from heat over the years, but I bet most of the pics the guys sent you are real close!

So what color blue would be correct for a 230? Mine was orange when I bought the truck and I'm just not crazy about an orange I6. I like the chevy orange on v8's but it just doesn't seem right on a 6...
