I've never done a wood bed before, but contractors in this area use Spar Varnish for all their exterior doors. It is waterproof. As far as stain color, first choose the brand of Spar Varnish and then use their recommended stain colors for best results.

Re: Bed Wood Finishes

I painted my bed wood with the same color as my truck and used automotive clear coat. I really thinned out my color so it acted more like a "candy" and less like a color. In the last pic you can see the pearl in the wood. Also be sure to apply 2-3 good coats of clear and then let it dry really good, sand with 600-800 (DA) and then reclear. That way you seal the grain good.

That is just beautiful man. I'm a hardwood floor refinisher by trade and that is nice.

Thank you. Check out my build page for how I did it. I think you will be surprised.

Re: Bed Wood Finishes

I was worried about the finish lasting so I went to a boat shop bought a quart of Marine Varnish. I mixed two types of stain together to get what looked ok to me, turned a board over applied the stain & varnish let it cure to insure I would be satisfied. The marine varnish wasn't cheap but I would recommend using something proven to last in the UV protection area. I would use no less than 3-5 coats. I just hate to redo them after a year or two & if it lasts 3-5 on a boat deck in salt water should last 5-10 in my application. No pics at this time sorry.
