replacing upper control arm shafts

on a 67 1/2 ton, can you replace the upper control arm shaft and bushings with out separating the upper ball joint from the spindle?

I don't see why not. Just make sure you take the weight off the upper end. Are you having problems seperating the upper ball joint?

That's how I did mine. Just watch out and make sure the coil spring has no load on it. When mine is jacked all the way up it unloads the coil spring all the way. Besure you get the measurement correct when you reinstall the caps. The service manual has the correct measurements in it. Also keep the alignment spacers in order. Break loose the caps before you take the control arm mount bolts off.

Yes you can replace the shaft and bushings without breaking the upper joint loose.I have done it many times. Just make sure your jack stand or jack is out under the lower ball joint as far as possible.This will takethe pressure off the upper control arm.you can remove the 2 nuts that hold the crosshaft to the frame,and then just swing the arm out where you can work on it.

Sorry guys but thats a brain injury waiting to happen. if that spring unloads while you have the upper shaft undone .... just sign a donor card first. Get the proper tool and compress the spring then do your work. Autozone and others have loan a tool programs.

I don't have a problem separating the upper ball joint or removing the spring. Just looking for the most efficient way. Don't want to do something if its not needed.
