fuel line

Just a quick question.... is it possible to place an inline fuel filter just before a mechanical fuel pump? Or will this cause problems? Any thoughts, comments are appreciated.

That is where mine is located on the present engine. No problems that I am aware of.

Typically you want the fuel filter after the pump incase any debris or componants from the pump are sent upstream. It's also harder on the pump to pull fuel in and could cause pump failure if the filter becomes restricted. Although I'll admin "" I have mine at the rear of the cab before the pump. I couldnt see cluttering up my nice new stainless steel lines and AN fittings with a fuel filter. But I wont have any room to talk with the carb floods out because of some piece of trash from the pump gets in there. Do what ya gotta do, just make sure there's a filter in the line.

I use two cheap hi-flow filters. Before and after the pump.

I have 2 on mine also....one under the cab, and a pretty chrome/glass one under the hood so i can keep tabs on how much rust I am flushing out of the tank.

I also have a Carter electric pump and have two filters, one before the pump and one in the engine bay. I have the first one there to protect the pump.

Since the fuel line from the pump to the carb is hard, how have you guys went about putting a filter between the pump and carb?

alex- I cut about 3" out of the line next to the carb and use neoprene rubber fuel line and Gates clamps on the filter.

Heres a pic of my inline fuel filter on the left of the carb. Its a clear one which is nice so you can see if fuel is getting to the carb and whether its dirty or not. It was like $10 at Autozone.

Wow I really do need to get a new intake to match that shiny new carb. Performer RPMs soundin good bout now.

Glass Fuel Filter

I hard lined my glass filter in place.

Had several rumors from truck people in my area saying that the filter if attached with rubber fuel line would allow the filter to hit metal and crack or break, you know the rest.

Any comments to this theory?

Blue Beard, it can happen, and has. A gy i know refuses to run them since he singed his stuff under the hood of his big block el camino that way.
however, if you place it where it is imposable to hit anything...then it won't hit anything.
I been running them for years on quite a few vehicles...never had a problem yet. You just gotta think about stuff like that when you do it.

one of my friends had a glass one break, he has a electric fuel pump so it kept pumping fuel, he got caught between the truck and the garage door when he was pushing the truck out of the garage, it was pretty scary, dont take much to start a fire when fuel hits the headers.

I had one of those break for no reason on a very cold night before I painted my truck red. Wind chill was maybe 20-30 below. It didnt hit anything and was already broken when I got out to my truck after work. Ive been running one since then with no problems.

Well, one thing, if they don,t break they last a long time cause it's easy to take apart and clean. I think maybe some guys overtighten them with pliers and put the strain on the glass. I have one somewhere but am using a cheap plastic throw away unit now.

If you had Gas shoot out the top of a holley, there is a good chance it shelled the accelerator pump.......Holley's are notorious for that. My truck has 2 fuel filters, 1 before and 1 after the pump.....never had a problem.

I have a filter before my fuel pump then before the carb. I have a rubber hose running from the pump to the carb...is that bad??? I have seen some with a steel fuel line from the pump to the carb...is it dangerous to have a rubber line???

I have the same setup as swingsax68, electric fuel pump on frame rail under the cab, short length of rubber to the pump and then rubber line all the way to the carb. I've been wondering about hard lines as the rubber lines need replacing.

Does anyone have a picture of the original solid steel lines, what diameter tube is it and how is it routed? Is it safe to have all rubber lines and would it be better to have steel braided hoses rathaer than just plain rubber?

Just got my truck back safe...going to a job this AM on the highway it started going slower 50-40-30 with the gas pedal to the floor. Limped to a gas station and checked all the fluid levels went to start it again, ran fine and made it back home. It has 1 of those coffee canister filters under the pass side cab thats probably clogging up don't know if they make filters like those anymore.

About the original hard line, it runs from the mechanical pump on the block to the front and across the top to a 90 degree turn into the front of the carb that has a built-in filter. If your running rubber line make sure it's fuel line rubber. The hard line is approx 1/4" I've got that setup on the 72 maybe you can make it out on the engine pic at my site.

i love the glass ones., used the same one for years now on the harley! it vibrates the hell out of still no trouble. the trick is to posistion the filter so no matter how hard you hit or shake it it never hits anything.

If you want to use one of those glass POS filters, run don't walk to the nearest store and buy a fire extinguser. ( you should have one in your truck anyway. ) The question is not if they will fail, but when.
