Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
Just a quick question....
I notice that most people prefer the chevy trucks over the gmc's. What is the difference between the two. I always understood that they were the same truck. Please enlighten me..... Oh bye the way this is my 72 Sierra Grande and I love her dearly (her name is Bell72).... |

Re: Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
The CheyenneSuper and SierraGrande are the same thing. The 67-72 era was the GMC`s last phase of being a different truck. There were few differences between the two by`72.With the right order,a GMC and Chevy could be the same. The main differences were,at first,GMCs had no V8,Dana rears, and leaf springs standard. On the Chevys V8 and no V6 available,Eaton rears, and coils were standard.By the end no V6 in GMC.Coils could be ordered on a GMC and leafs could be ordered on a Chevy(since`67).Some Chevys had Dana rears optioned. Not sure about Eatons in GMCs.
I like GMCs.

Re: Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
I think it is because more people own Chevy's. I own a 72 GMC Sierra and I vote for GMC. If I had a Chevy I would be saying something different. The bottom line is GM truck are awesome.

Re: Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
A nice GMC Sierra Grande is a pretty rare truck these days as the production numbers were quite low. GMC was always considered a work truck while chevrolet----well---quite a few were garage queens.

Re: Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
I originally started looking for a Cheyenne Super SWB factory two-tone in any color combination and ended up with a GMC Sierra Grande SWB factory two-tone. So i'm kind of partial to the GMC, but still looking for the Cheyenne Super.

Re: Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
Personaly the only thing that put me off the GMC was the front end it all looks a bit heavy and bulky in design...the Chevys had a more stylish and cleaner look IMO.
But it seems you got a rare truck there and it looks good.

Re: Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
When I`m at a show or swap meet like Carlisle with alot of trucks for sale and alot are high optioned trucks. You start peering from a distance for what model and what it ha.Get a bit closer and can tell it`s probably a CheyenneSuper.Then...you see that elegant SierraGrande badge on the bedside, you check that tailgate band and see those 3 letters, and fially walk around and there`s that chromed out grille and four headlights. It doesn`t get any better than that for me.It`s like seeing a Camaro, getting closer, and seeing it`s a COPO or Yenko.
From what a guy that built trucks for GM in Baltimore told me,every 5th truck on the line was GMC.I believe there were a smaller percent of total GMCs ordered as SierraGrandes than percent of CheyenneSupers ordered in total number of Chevys. So,I figure there were less than 20% SierraGrandes than CheyenneSupers. And,from my experience of checking every truck I`ve seen over 35 years in as many states I believe that`s true. It`s like going to the beach in California and seeing all these beautiful California blue-eyed blonde beach bunnies, one after the next. You`re in heaven. Then, you spot a raven haired dark eyed girl that just has it all and a bag of chips that knocks you on your tail.Wouldn`t kick any one out of bed for eatin`crackers, but that exotic gal has got to be the one.

Re: Super Cheyene vs Sierra grande
I was told by some GM people (truck assembly plants-Moraine, Ft Wayne) that certain parts of the county were more GMC populated than Chevy. It makes since...I was in Estes Park a few years ago and I could not believe all the Subies running around. I also agree that the GMC was considered by many more of a work truck so to have a highly optioned GMC is more rare when compared to Chevy. My LWB 402 70CST is highly optioned but a 70GMC optioned the same way would be much more rare. Me.....I like GMC's and Chevy's and I would be proud to own either. By the way Bell72...Nice truck!

My truck looks just like yours but 3/4 ton. For the later years (69-72), I prefer the GMC look. I do like the 67-68 Chevy though.
