My New Ride
With gas prices being what they are in the Northern California Bay Area, I bought a new car for commuting to work. (70 miles round trip)
It has a 8.7 gallon tank which got me almost 300 miles on the first fill. It is called a Smart Car. I have not yet taken it to work, but fully expect to get some ribbing. I just hope they dont put it on the second floor patio.

Re: My New Ride
When I was stationed in Germany, me and a buddy rented one of those things. I know you never seen me, and I am no meathead, but I'm about 6'0, 200 lbs, and my buddy is 6'1, 240.......let's just say we had a lot of fun, jumped some small "road obstacles" and in general, just beat the hell out of it for fun. We got laughed at, but we were laughing more. And no one makes fun of you at the gas station, that's for damn sure!

Re: My New Ride
Now it needs some way to stuff a 350 in it. Course, it would be easier to put wheels and a seat on a 350 !!! I'd drive one if it did all the stuff from the first and second videos.

Re: My New Ride
Hey it will save you $$$$ in the end for the truck! What's the price range for one of those?
Now all you have to do it try to graft a '72 front end on the front like the little rigs in Japan.

Personally I'd like one, but dont think I would fit in it. As far as heklers, forget about it. There's no shame in preserving a household budget.

Re: My New Ride
I've had mine for a couple months now. Great car. 4 star crash rating. They have been up here for a few years now, and I have seen a couple in wrecks. Very safe car.
Everyone who has ridden in mine can't believe how big the car feels inside. Not a rocketship, but who cares, I get high 48mpg (imperial gallon)in town. We are planning a roadtrip in ours to LA in a month. Can't wait.

They are basically a glorified go-cart. But hey, go-carts can be fun too.

Re: My New Ride
How do they do on the highway at speed? I saw one here in town the other day for the first time. I think they'd be great for buzzing around town. I watched a Top Gear where they crash-tested some and they did quite well, basically a steel cage around the occupants.

Re: My New Ride
I like em alot. They make a sort of convertible version thats pretty cool. I personally dont give a rip about what anyone says about any car or truck I drive. I have almost 95 thousand miles on my Scion XB.
I dont understand the part about spending over 14 grand on a car to save on gas though. Math doesn't add up in my head =) Last edited by CG; 05-10-2008 at 08:40 AM. |

Re: My New Ride
$2550 for my used Saturn 4 years ago, since then I've put 60k miles on it with only minor repairs and maintenance, it usually gets 38-40 mpg on the highway, with a best of 43.5. Its actually really easy to work on, giving it a tune up only takes 25 minutes or so, oil changes take about 15, and I put all new engine/transaxle mounts in it in about 3 hours. It does need new struts though and I'm not looking forward to that.

Re: My New Ride
The dealership here in Sac is right next door to the stereo shop I frequent. We were talking about them and figured out that we could almost bolt in a Hyabusa motorcycle motor. Problem is that the tranny wouldn't take it.
They are kinda cool and are super light. The entire body is made of recycle-able plastics and the cars are fairly cheap and REALLY small. I wouldn't be caught dead in one, but I see the appeal. For those of you who hate them, don't knock it 'til you try it. They are a neat little car and if any of you have kids going to college, these might just be a good little car for them to use for a few years.

Re: My New Ride
OK, I did the math. It could be off, but I think its sorta right. I figured how much you spend a day on gas at 8mpg and at 48 mpg subtracted the difference then divided $14,500 by that number.
With that logic it will take 14.5 years before the car pays for itself. |

I hope I NEVER cross paths with one in my Silverado on the highway
They do really well in low speed accidents. Even the side impact test looked really good.
