Do I really need the rock shields for my front disc brakes??

I am thinking of throwing off the rock shields for the front brake rotors.. is it imparitive that I use those things? anyone elese not running them?

I was not running them before I tore my truck down and my rotors were fine, so was my buddy with his 68.

I figured the engineers at GM put them on originally so I used them when I did the disc conversion. They seem to keep the backside of my billet wheels clean. If you already have them on, why get rid of them???
