Lost keys?

Since I had a single key that was pretty worn I bought a new set of lock cylinders on sale. I hadn't installed them yet, but I lost my worn out key a couple days ago and it hasn't turned up yet, so I decided to tackle this today.

I started searching threads and found that it was going to be somewhat painful to remove the ignition cylinder without the existing key. I saw LockDocs thread about the code on the door lock cylinder so I called a locksmith to see if they could help. They said, no problem, just bring the code and your registration.

Well, I removed BOTH passenger and driver door cylinders and there was no code on them. Since it was already out, I took the passenger door cylinder to the locksmith and they made a new key from that. 31 bucks, but no nightmare with removing the ignition cylinder.

So if you lost your key and don't want to deal with replacing the ignition cylinder and you don't have the key code, see if the locksmith can make you a new key using the door cylinder.

Oh yeah, I don't know how many times I forgot this lesson. Make multiple copies of your keys before you need a spare!

Re: Lost keys?

this is assuming your key matches the door and ignition... they did originally, but many times something happens.
One of the 4 trucks I've had still retained the 3 matching locks. (and that set has been in 3 of the trucks too)

Good point - I only had a single key for door and ign, and the locksmith (who may or may not be a Chevy expert )said they used a single key for both up until 73. I'm sure there are many out there with two keys, so YMMV.

I have run across a few door locks that didn't have codes on them but in 25 years of servicing locks on trucks I can count the number of times on one hand.... I think it may be because all of the locks may have been replaced at one time and some replacements had a code tag on the key ring instead of being stamped on the lock cylinder.
