6.9L deisel with banks turbo
who makes a 6.9? i know chevy is 6.2 and 6.6 i think, and i think powerstroke is 7. something.. we found a 6.9 with a banks for $1500 and my dad wants it for his truck, but i dont want to tell him what he should do without some info

the 6.9 was the first diesel ford started putting in their trucks in the 80's, ( we have an 86 f250 with the 6.9 that has almost 300,000 on it and it's still going strong.it's made by international,the engine is very dependable.

A quick search on Google seems to indicate that it's a smaller version of the 7.3L Navistar (Ford PowerStroke) diesel engine.

I wouldn't even be able to guess. The wap you are talking about has quite a few more vadriables than mine.
Will your torsion bars (crap) hold the added weight. Will you have enough oil pan room Will you hace enough front to back room will your tranny and Xfer case hold up What about computer stuff What about exhaust How about hood clearance cooling issues I could keep going... |

The 6.9L was manufactured by International/Navistar, and was the predecessor to the 7.3L, which eventually became the Powerstroke used today by Ford.
I wouldn't bother trying to install a 6.9L into a Chevy. The Ford diesels use a completely different bellhousing than all the other Ford and Chevy engines. It's pretty heavy, and I just don't see the point. It would be so much easier to install a 6.2L or 6.5L GM diesel in. Both will bolt right up to the SM465 with no adapters necessary. only thing about chevy deisels, ive found maybe 2 people who have good words to say about them.. i even mentioned turbos and everyone said dont bother trying to fix one up.. ill check out that page though

I would go with something else if I were you. Those engines do last a long time (I know of one that finaly spun a crank bearing last year that had almost 450k on it). But, even with the turbo, they don't have that much power. I know someone that has a 78 c/20 with a 350, and a f-350 with a turbo 6.9, and the chevy they said the chevy has way more power. Also, didn't the 6.9 diesels have some problem with pitting in the clyenders if you used the wrong coolant?

They 6.2L are great engines if you know what you're doing with 'em. I've owned 4 of them, and I'll never go back to a small block again. I'm not going to say that they'll outpull a Binder or Cummins, but they're cheap, easy to work on, and get great mileage.
For example, my '81 with 6.2L averages around 19 mpg driving solo, and around 12 mpg towing my 29' fifth-wheel camper. It has plenty of towing power too, as I've pulled my rig all over the place, even to Florida and back, with no problems whatsoever. I have a turbo laying in the shop that I'll install one of these days. I don't have any personal experience (yet) at how much power a turbo adds, but I'll soon find out. As was also mentioned, the 6.9L and 7.3L have problems with cavitation, that is pitting of the cylinder walls. This is because the cylinder walls flex from the strong cumbustion cycles. The GM diesels don't have this problem because of thicker side walls. The Binder motors have to run a special additive in the coolant to prevent pitting. If the PO's didn't maintain the engine properly, there is a good chance the block has been seriously weakened. Good luck!

about how much would a TD 6.5 cost? what about a 6.2 and twin turbos? will it work in a A/C truck? the 6.9 i found is for sale for $1500, ive found a 91 6.2 on the desiel page and i emailed the guy asking price

man that would be SWEET! i dont think i'd have any problems pulling the annual 25000 lb pulls hard to believe we pull that with a pickup, 10 rolls of hay weighing in at around 2500 lbs each. only issue there, $$$

I would venture to say that a used 6.5TD would probably cost $1500 to $2500 depending on miles and condition. New longblocks typically start at $3000 and go up from there.
I know of one gentleman on the diesel page who is running twin turbos on his 6.2L. Other than that, I've not heard much about doing that sort of a project. That 6.9L for $1500 including the turbo is a pretty good deal, but you'll probably have a lot of money tied up in just making the thing fit. It might be easier to use a Ford tranny and TC as well.

On the 3208 cat.. they have a term for those they are commonly known as the "throw away cat" after 200,000 miles or so, usually less, the motor gets weak enough to have to have it rebulit.. then suddenly you find out that the market for replacement parts on them is so high you can just buy another one to drop in it.. a new one that is.. we have helped the local fire department with this..

Thats what we did for the fire department, we bought one off of ebay In the shop this last week, we have been working on a 9000 ford ltl.. it had a 238 detroit in it.. to better explain the ones that have the 671v blowers, we swapped it out for a big cam 400 cummins.. the guy had us call to see if it *the whole detroit motor* would be worth anything as a core, we called out as far as the numbers we had would reach and nobody was interested in it... after all of that took place the guy told me just in the last year and a half he spent over 1300 dollars getting the blower rebuilt including new rotors and a casing. After all of that he just gave us the motor.. which made me really proud we couldnt sell to somebody else as a core.. now its time to find new gaskets and start pricing blower stuff

man i had forgot about this post! we finally got the 89 running good and gave up on swapping motors for now, 217K miles and still running strong
