Speakers in doors
PO of my truck cut the doors for speakers, so thats where mine are going to go.
He cut them for not one, but 2 sets of speakers. How are you guys running the wiring for speakers in the doors? Pics if you got em.

Re: Speakers in doors
I ran my wires through the body just infront of the doors (drilled a hole in the metal and fed the wire up to just behind the dash. The wire went through the front of the door (another hole drilled) and then I put rubber grommets in around the wire.

Re: Speakers in doors
Thanks, I'm gonna go take a peak at my truck and see what's up. I already have the holes drilled in the front of the doors, just gotta figure out the rest...

Re: Speakers in doors
I'm kind of having a hard time getting my head around this. The part about running the wires through the body, I can't figure how the wires get to the dash. It looks like the wires would be trapped behind the kick panel vent area.

Re: Speakers in doors
I had to drill a small hole in the kick panel and fish wires through. I have carpet covered kick panels, so the hole is covered. If you don't have covers you could drill low enough to go under carpet.

Re: Speakers in doors
Also be sure to stagger the exit (from the kick panel) and the entrance (to the door) - this will allow for some slack when opening/closing the door and reduce the possibility of rubbing through the wiring...
If you want an example the PO did this on my project truck and I have the front fenders off so I can take a picture of what I am talking about... PM if you need a shot or two. |

Re: Speakers in doors
Use grommets on the holes, or some silicone will also work so the wire isn't sitting on the cut metal of the door.

According to the PO... "what are rubber grommets?"

Re: Speakers in doors
I went back out to my truck to take a look, and still can not figure this out. It seems like there is a double wall in the kick panel area, I have no idea how you could fish the wires through. My brain must be on vacation today.

Re: Speakers in doors
I've seen some guys that have the touch knobs, hard to explain. Contacts ends, little round nubbs that touch when you shut the door. Not sure how well they work.
I'll try to gather up a pick, i'm sure someone has an example.

Re: Speakers in doors
On my Chevy, the PO ran the wires into the vent. Then he brought them out to the left and forward of where these wires exit. Kind of at the "back" of the front fender, would be the best way to describe it.
On my GMC, the installer ran the speaker wires under the edge of the carpet to the weatherstripping. Then up inside the weatherstripping for about 3" and then around the door jamb & into the front of the door.

Re: Speakers in doors
Drill holes......use grommets. Then with some patience and some rigid wire (clothes hanger) bent as needed and negotiated through holes, you can pull your speaker wires through. Not too tough at all.

Re: Speakers in doors
Got the pix when I got home and didn't get a chance to post them until now...
The PO of my project fished them through the lower cowl area - totally hidden when fenders are on and even less friction from wires... 1st pic is straight down the psgr side with the door open 2nd pic is standing in the doorway looking toward the front of the cab... If you need more - let me know. Hope that helps. |

Re: Speakers in doors
Sin,
Also use a heavy gauge heat shrink between the door and the body. That will help cut down on cut wires when the door is open.
