Unhappy Oil Leak

This is a strange one. This is a new motor I have changed the front oil seal again and the harmonic balancer is new with the motor. The 350 is from a newer chevy truck carburated and has been bored and stroked to a 383. This may not matter but... It seems it is blowing oil from the the front right of the motor. Can it come from the fuel pump connection to the motor or am I missing a plug on the front of the block. I put my hand up by the front oil seal and it is dry but the pan is covered. I thought for sure it was the front pan oil seal but that is dry too. Any thoughts that would help would be great.

Re: Oil Leak

If it is a new GM replacement block it has a provision for an oil dipstick on both sides You have to plug the one you don't use.

Re: Oil Leak

It is not a new GM replacement block it is from a late 80's truck. But I will look for a dipstick location.

Thanks

Re: Oil Leak

isn't there plugs on the front of an engine that blow out when the engine gets extremely overehated to prevent really bad damage, there is a name for them but it slipped my mind???

It is gonna kill me until I remember it.

Re: Oil Leak

It has not overheated and the oil pressure is between 20-40 psi.

Re: Oil Leak

Isn't there a bolt hole or something by the fuel pump that can leak oil if it is not plugged? Seems I read that on here somewhere before.

Yes. On the front of the block is a threaded hole that lines up with the centerline of the fuel pump pushrod. A short bolt (making sure it doesn't contact the pushrod) needs to be installed w/ sealer. Otherwise, oil will leak out.

Re: Oil Leak

I just went through the same thing with my fresh 355.After a long battle,it turned out the leak was in fact coming from around the fuel pump.I removed the pump, cleaned the pump flange, the plate, and the block.New gaskets and goop, reinstalled. It's been good since.

Do you mean a freeze plug?

What type of valve cover bolts do you have? Make sure they are tight and gaskets are good, not a "yeah I put new one's on" but take the covers off and inspect them.
