Torsions To Bags Advise Needed!

I'm looking at sticking bags under the front of my 60 panel in the next month or two and am looking for some advise As i understand it i need to take the torsion bars out and pop the bags in between the top and bottom arms. I will probably fab the plates up myself- what thickness will i need for top and bottom plates? Also can somebody recommend what bags i use and where to get them? I will probably just run lines into the cab with schrader valves to keep things cheap and simple for the time

I have some un-installed as of yet plates for the top and they are 1/4", or 6m depending on what system your on over there. I purchased the Slam bags due to the built in bumpstop.......check e-bay; sold everywhere as far as I can see. I asked about them on the suspension section and they werte highly recommended............re7 is the bag.

You can also purchase a'cup' for the lower a-arm, although plenty of people weld on the plate and it works just as well.

Yeah Tinker, thats the bag........there are different series w/ higher ratings depending on what you are doing. The re series is rated for 200psi......Im only running a 150psi system and not planning on hopping or anything. Most responses I got on the suspension thred said people barely run 120psi max most of the time. Cant complain about the price either!

Could you spare a few extra # notes?

Yeah those prices are pretty reasonable, although shipping and import dutys always sting me What would a basic compressor/tank cost to run these bags- what compressor will you run?
Also, what dya reckon to ride quality on these bags and will they give a lot of body roll?

As far as material, 1/4" plate is plenty. Plates for the lower arms will also be required as there are no spring pockets.

I would combine that with a spindle if you are interested in more drop.

Thanks for the reply John, Yeah i figured plating upper and lower arms but just was'nt sure on thickness. Also i was planning on bolting them in, but on the lower arms should i fix the plate to the bottom of the arm or the top of the arm?

Already running drop spindles

Sorry Steve......I was thinking of 63+ a-arms........my buddy bagged his '62 just as you described. Cups wrk in the newer a-arms.

I have not finished the install so I cant comment on ride quality.

Compressors and tanks........I have found as many opinions as you can imagine. I decided to use viair 400 2-pack. Cheaper than 380's and 480's and is faster, 3.0cfms apiece (roughly). The only downside is 60a draw....I ran #4 to feed the compressors and just bought a 95a alternator this morning. Im inside waiting for my brackets to degrease themselves so I can paint. I will then finish the electric install......then on to the bag install. You can check out stuff so far on my '1964 suburban pics' thread.

Thats one sweet suburban you have there protrash. I think i will just run schrader valves for the time as moneys tight and i only plan on finding a fairly low ride height and leaving it there

Do you know if your buddy with the 62 fitted his bottom airbag plates to the bottom of the lower arm or the top? I don't suppose you have any pics of your buddys set-up?

As far as the bottom plates are concerned...mounting them underneith would allow a lower drop. However, how much clearance is there on the lower a-arm?

The bag cannot rub any part of the arm or chassis. Mabey some clearanceing of the arm might be neccesary, or just run them on top.

I believe its as John stated........on top of the a-arm. I just dont think there is enough clearance. I dont have pics but I can tell you the stance is very low and not on the ground. Oh yeah, the # on the slam bag refers to the diameter.........perhaps the tape measure would come in handy...my trucks are both 64 so I dont have anything to reference.


I re-read my earlier post and noticed that a 6 meter plate would be a little thick............I meant millimeter!

Thanks for the replys again fellas, I will probably fix the plates to the top of the bottom arms then. I aren't trying to get it on the deck, just low enough to look cool and drive nice
I only got it MOT'd on Friday after working on it for nearly 18 months. I am well pleased with how it drives- Took it up to about 120mph earlier and it just sat steady as a rock

Oh yeah, 6 metre thick plates would be a tad on the heavy side!

Hey there T/D.........talked to my friend. He said his lower plates went on the TOP of the LOWER LIP of the arm. He said they have a channel on the inside. Cut your shape, roughly trianglar, then slide it in the channel from the wide, open end that usually is inboard. Thats how he mounted his plates and bags.
