Project Fatboy Update
Finally getting around to making some updates to the truck. I got my tilt column installed week before last, and got my new 18&20 Coys mounted with some suspension changes done 3 weeks ago. So I started replacing doors last nite and got some pretty good progress made. Gonna start with the passenger door tonite ( if it fits up as good as the drivers door all will be great !!). I'll post pics as I go. Here are the pics from the drivers side.

Re: Project Fatboy Update
Cool, are you putting one piece windows in?. You may want to consider adding some sound deadener inside the door. Looks good so far!

Re: Project Fatboy Update
That's what I am wondering too. If theye look as good in person as they do in the pic you should be able to get some decent coin for them.
I always enjoy seeing pics of your truck.

Re: Project Fatboy Update
They had rust come up in the bottom of them shortly after I got the truck ( I've had these doors and all new internals for 5 years and the passenger door was starting to look bad ). Yes I have thought about 1 piece windows ( as a matter of fact Josh Kaylor and I were discussing that tonite ). No fitment issues with the drivers door and won't be able to finish pulling the old passenger door and mounting the new until tommorrow evening. Can't wait to get this done, it will be so nice to have doors where the windows don't rattle !!! Just gonna be a quickie for now, i'll fit them and then pull and paint them, got some more changes to make but I'll do those over the winter.

Re: Project Fatboy Update
Lets keep our fingers crossed that the passenger side fits as well as the drivers side door. It appears that Tri-Pro John's sheet metal is really good, we'll know more this evening and I'll post some more pics tommorrow.

Re: Project Fatboy Update
Not sure if anyone has ever tried "Black Jack" for the doors or fenderwells. It seals super and since you can trowel it on it acts like sound deadening.

Re: Project Fatboy Update
Back on the subject of the driver's side door. How long ago did you purchase them? The reason that I ask is because the Tri-plus left doors have been not fitting very well over the last couple of years. I have been hammering on Tri-Plus to fix their doors and their responce was
Quote:
Furious, I mounted one of their L/H doors to one of my cabs, and then took pictures!! I showed them how the window hoop hit the drip rail, I took pictures with the tape measure on the Tri-Plus door, and then on the original GM door. Both for the height of the window hoop and the gap where the anti rattle weatherstrips mount. (I had done this 3 or 4 years ago also and was told they fixed the problem.) I was also told recently that they finaly fixed them again. (However, like I said I have been told that several times in the past) I am avoiding buying or selling them untill they have the problems solved. If your door is a recent purchase that means they must have fixed at least the hoop problem. Also can you tell me what the demention of the gap is for the roll up window? Their doors (at least untill now) have always measured 1 1/8" to 1 3/16" and the factory doors are 1" exactly. If you have anything larger than the 1" gap, you might considder that befor you make your decision on the single piece side window kit. The single piece side windows do not have any support when the window is only partialy down. They rely on the weatherstrip to hold them steady. If the gap is too large, then the window rattles around when down. This responce is not meant to make John's or Tri-Plus parts look bad, because all of the other parts that I have seen Tri-Plus manufacture are great!! Quite the oppisate, John is an exelent vender that only has his customer's best wishes at heart. It is just the doors are not so good, and I have been working to remidy that. Oh, and also the long bed pickup rear lower quarter patch is lousy, it only resembles the original, but no channel in the weel well lip, or no indentation under the taillight. WES

Re: Project Fatboy Update
Got the passenger door on ( needs some adjustment ) looks like I am gonna pull the fenders ( or entire clip ) to be able to get to the bolts on the hinges to make the required adjustments. The fit with this one is not as good as the drivers door ( Drivers door came in TriPlus Box and pass. door came in Goodmark Box ), go figure, they are made by the same company and both doors came from Goodmark in Georgia. I'll post more as I progress in this adventure. All I know is my deadline is Goodguys Nashville in June !!!!

Re: Project Fatboy Update
I was helping him install them yesterday and it seemed as though the goodmark door did not fit as well as the tri-plus. Here is one of the odd gaps it has!
Here you can see the rough gap down towards the lower part of the trim

Re: Project Fatboy Update
Thanks for letting me know. The problems that we have experienced have been more recent than that. I would still check the roll-up window gap if you are contimplating the single piece side window kit. WES

Re: Project Fatboy Update
Wes- I can only imagine who told you there were "No issues" but that person may not have been aware of what was going on.
There have been two specific issues that I'm aware of (Which is why we don't have them in stock right now) but the issues are a symptom of assembly and not tooling. They are checking the jig for setting the top rail; and we've also discussed shipping them without the rail welded- which would also allow the doors to be sent UPS. Hopefully another production run is done soon so we can go back to selling them. I have three cabs out here for fitting and as soon as they arrive we'll be bolting them on. Jim and I did throw a '72 door on the passenger's side of the cab we're working on and it fit great. The other issue we had we could identify visually and weeded out the problematic pieces. |
