Question Demonic Starter

I've looked around on this site and made sure that my starter and solenoid are wired up correctly, but I'm having a pretty odd problem...
When I turn the key, the starter kicks in. BUT when i let it back to the ON position, the starter keeps turning. And it will keep going in the OFF position as well, so then I have to jump out and take the wires off my battery terminal in order for the starter to stop.
I have a new starter and solenoid that a friend gave me, but is changing it out needed? The starter seems good and strong and will turn on, but wont stop. What would cause this?
Thanks for all the help guys.

Re: Demonic Starter

Only thing I can say is to double check the wiring to the solenoid and make sure that all the wires are where they are supposed to be. It sounds like you have a wire that is feeding constant power back to the solenoid.

Re: Demonic Starter

If my yellow and purple wires were backwards on my solenoid would it cause this? I've thought about switching them out and seeing what happens...
And if constant power was feeding the solenoid wouldn't it be trying to crank whenever the battery was connected?

Re: Demonic Starter

Take the purple wire off the solenoid and jump from there to the large terminal on the solenoid with the ignition key on and see if the starter continues turning. This will eliminate the key switch and wiring and if the starter keeps turning it probably has a weak or broken bendix return spring or it is binding with the flywheel teeth and won't disengage until you pull the battery cable. "Make sure the truck is not in gear and or jack up the rear wheels."
Did the engine die when you shut the key off?

2. Not if the constant power was from a key on source.

Re: Demonic Starter

You mentioned a new starter, would it by chance be one of the newer permanent magnet starters?

I am finishing up a rebuild on my motor and haven't started it up for the first time yet. But I'd hate for it to fire up and my starter motor keep turning
I'm going to figure this out in the morning, I'm guessing/hoping it's just the old starter because I've left my wiring pretty much the same as when I bought the truck and I never had this problem before the rebuild.
