Stick to Auto

I have a '69 GMC short bed with a manual transmission. How hard is it to switch to an automatic?

is it a 3 speed or 4 speed. 3 speed manual isnt too bad. 4 speed involves filling the hole in the floor somehow

It's not to bad, I just started my conversion today. Pull the exhast out of the way, undo the parking brake cable, pull the driveshaft and plug the end of the tail, pull the tranny, then support the back of the motor and pull the bellhousing, then the clutch. I'm using a sawzall to cut the rivit heads off the crossmember, seems to work ok. It's down hill from there. Just be sure to get every part you need before you start.

As long as we are talking about moving the exhaust out of the way be prepared to get new exhaust. The Y-pipe that went around my 3-speed manual didn't have enough room for my th350. So to make a long story short I got a new transmission and new exhaust.

I went with the dual exhaust kit from LMC. Which was actually made by a company in Litchfield, MN. Just down the road from da-burb's place.

I guess I don't remember squat about that GMC. I thought it was a long bed! If it wasn't for that, I would have known right off. It wasn't until you put the location that I finally figured it out!

It is a pretty cool site. I’m glad you joined up!
