Post What modifications for 73+ steering gear?

Is it a bolt in our trucks? Would you need the pitman for the year truck the gear box is out of? What else would be needed? Thanks

I'm pretty sure they are interchangable up to something like 1980 when they switched to metric. I recently added power steering to my 70 and I was going to use a box from a '76. The 76 box bolted up fine with no modifications, but I couldn't use it because it was too worn out. I bought a reman. box at Hi-lo for a 70 and the only difference between the 70 and the 76 box I found was the input shaft (the splined thing that the rag joint connects to) was a different size. Turns out the input shafts changed size around 76. I had no trouble finding the right size rag joint at the junkyard.

I used a 75 Chevy truck P/S box on my 72, had no problems. Everything went together like the original 72. The 75 pitman arm was on the box, used the 72 steering shaft and connector.

One more thought, those 80 up metric boxes have a faster ratio.....I have one on my longhorn,& I like it! To set it up, I used the hoses for an 84 burb(what the box was from),& have the later style water pump & accessories. You can also have hoses made up pretty cheap, all you need are the ends. Good luck........69longhorn.

I have used the 81 up boxes before and only changed the valves at the back where the hoses go. This lets you use the metric lines and your pump -no problems. The valves are the backing nut where you screw in the lines. No adapter fittings needed.

I did the same thing chevman did. Unscrewed the pressure valve from the p/s pump and used a metric valve from the later model along with the pressure hose. The return just slid the rubber hose on my pump.

I changed the valve at the back of the pump, but used a 73 up waterpump, steering pump, ect(engine is set in on 6/250 stands). Will that valve also work in the oldstyle pumps?.....69

I bolted up a 79 PS Box but I had to notch out my Bumber Bracket because the Bracket was in the way of the Box Bolting up.. But other then that, it is a complete Bolt on. For a PS pump, I had to pull one out of a 76 Chevy Van because the Junkyard I went to, did not have any PS Brackets on the Trucks, and then I had to buy a replacement Pump but for around $ 75 total for parts, I have Powersteering and it works a lot better then that manual steering.. If you get a PS box from a junkyard, you do need to get Pitman Arm and Ragjoint Also!!

Yes longhorn it will work on the old pumps. YOU just need to get the pittman arm, hoses and maybe the brackets if they match your water pump. IF you have trouble with the hose routing you might have to go look in the parts book at your local parts house. IT may take a few minutes, but it is all well worth it for power steering

No troubles Chevyman,I set up the metric box on the longhorn 3-4 yrs ago......just wondered if the later fitting worked with the early ps pumps(for future possible toys). Thanks for the info......69longhorn.
