70 k10 front diff axle seal leaking?

i just went out wheeling in my 70 chevy k10 this past night, got home washed it all off and noticed gear oil dripping down the pass front wheel. how hard are axle seals to put in these? and the vent, is it only the hose coming off the pumpkin? that didnt look plugged. ill get it on the lift and take a better look at it but, im just thinking if its a seal, would it be easier swapping the whole axle out for a disk brake axle? thanks guys

Matt

Edit:

Didn't realize you had closed knuckles.

Not too hard to replace the seal. A bear to really keep them sealed.

I'd go disk front, open knuckle.

this truck has an open knuckle set up, it has weird lock outs, they are the automatics? or whatever you would call them. its the ones where you dont lock them in, just use the transfercase.

Ah, ok... then it's more of a pain. You have to take apart the outers to get the shafts out... then pull the carrier to get at the seals. They (the seals) seat into the tubes.

If you have full time Chevy (from an NP203 t-case) then you have to swap the locking hubs... can get parts at the junkyard.

If it's a sealed unit bearing with a splined stub-shaft, then you have to replace knuckles out.

Got pics? There are a few options as to what the hubs could be... including a hub-less Dana from a Dodge.

Re: 70 k10 front diff axle seal leaking?

is it opn knuckle drums? could you have busted a wheel cylinder? Or is the oil coming out of the axle tube ends? That seal is actually in the center diff then. Take a pic of what you have...

FYI I swapped in a disc axle, it's a straight bolt in except for the brake lines, brake poroportioning valve and possibly the master cylinder. Just be sure to match the gears to your current axle.

That's how I would go then. Get rid of the drums, for a disk brake set up.

Could also swap knuckles out on your axle to keep the ratio, but you'd still need to fix the seals.

If you end up scrapping it, save the spindles. Jeepers love those to convert to 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern with those and Furd hubs and rotors.

Re: 70 k10 front diff axle seal leaking?

you could also pick up a booster setup and have power disc or drum brakes...
