Initial timing
can anybody give me a suggestion as to what timing I should have?
I have a 327 with a Comp High Energy 268H. I've played around with it, and thought I had it dialed in at about 6 degrees BTDC and this morning it back fired, so I'm thinking I need to adjust it a little. |

i would suggest 12-14 initial, & 34 total all in between 2500-2800 with the vac advance un hooked. Try to limit the vac advance to about 10 degrees, & hook to full manifold vac at the carb. that should get you in the ballpark, but ea combo tunes a little different, so you may have to play a little. I make it a practice to advance the distributor as far as it will go (with the engine running) until it starts to run rough. Then I back it off a little. Then I make sure there's no stumble in the acceleration.

good advise...it may be difficult to limti the vacuum advance to 10 degrees, unless you have a stop on it and an adjustable can...my engine likes 12 degrees initial with 12 degrees vacuum(full manifold vacuum) and 36 total all in by 2700..most vac cans are around 20-22 deg ...so it gets a little tricky

Well I looked at it tonight and figured out the problem. It was set at 2 degrees ATDC!! The bolt was loose, and must have vibrated around to that. I set it back at 6 degrees, tightened the bolt and all is good.
