49-54 chevy car suspension on a 47-54 truck
has anyone ever installed one? i have installed a few MII kits, but the price for the kit is what is making me hold off on one..... i'm going to be installing a 49-54 car suspension on my 52 truck. i'm going to bag it, dropped uprights and disk brakes.
i know a guy who has done this 4 times already. one on his 50 Burban and the 3 on customer trucks. after talking to him and one of his customers. they seem to be pretty happy. the say it looks like a truck but drives like a car. LOL BEFORE AFTER he did the same on this one and it was for a customer. i've seen this one up close and it looks like it was made for it. Last edited by frame_dragger; 06-10-2008 at 01:36 AM. |

Re: 49-54 chevy car suspension on a 47-54 truck
At one time I think it was a popular swap with the custom truck guys but now I think the cost of rebuild pieces would come close to matching the MII crossmember install if you ran Stock MII suspension pieces.
I'm looking at one of the welder series cross member kits for my truck and will probably get my son to do the welding on it. You have to admit that the 54 style suspension keeps the truck period correct though and a guy might pick up a nice one from someone changing suspension on a car. My chassis had a Pacer front end, but for the same reason($ of rebuild suspension parts) we chose to tear it off and order the MII front. Let us know how it turns out. Will it have disc brakes(not sure when they were 1st offered)? Saftey is always a #1 concern with me as my wife and son will be in my truck at times.

Re: 49-54 chevy car suspension on a 47-54 truck
well after horror stories about MII kits. i rather go with a more proven suspension. if it can last this long it will last a lot longer. plus, since everyone is putting on MII kits these are really cheap or free.
front rebuild (Kanter's $345) 2 1/2" dropped uprights $395 equals $740 and they sell disc brake kits for 49-54 chevy cars MII kits $1,300- 1,800 read this story http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...ghlight=dakota Last edited by frame_dragger; 06-10-2008 at 01:29 AM. |

-"looks like a truck but drives like a car" - remember, it would drive like an old car, which isn't much better than an old truck. If it were me, I would use something a little more modern and safe. Just my .02.
