Door Panel Questions (for my '63)

I'm disassembling a couple of doors before I have them sandblasted and had a few questions.

1. What type of screw head or what type of driver do I need to remove these screws (I've never seen these before)?

2. What type of weather-stripping is this and where can I buy? It seems as if it were once a pliable clay material that dries and conforms to a foam like material once installed (just a guess).

3. What trucks came with what mirrors? I want to use the mirrors that are mounted with three screws in the embedded door nuts which I believe came on light duty trucks, but the passenger door I picked up doesn't seem to have the three embedded provisions (I'm assuming the passenger door was off something heavy duty, wide load, etc).

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

If my eyes aren't lying, the screw type is refered to as 'clutch head' I think... I had a few of those on my holley that I just rebuilt (4160-1850). I tried all the normal big-name parts store trying to find them.Napa had 1, but it was way to thick. I ended up going to a local hardware store and found some cluth head driver bits. Turns out these are used for securing public restroom fixtures to help detur theft...

clutch heads..PITA.. some times a straight edge the right size will work.
also a good pair of vise grips.
look inside your pass door with a flashlight , there should be a bracket for the mirror in there..

I used a hefty flat screwdriver for mine it works pretty good, i changed those to a different style head though because a couple were rusted in and were a pain to get out

A large phillips head with lots of WD-40 worked well for me.

As for the mirrors, I believe that GMC trucks did not come with a passenger side mirror - so maybe you got some GMC doors.

I plan on using dabs of silicon on my door panel - just so that it cant rattle

The door panel weather strip is available at LMC Truck (www.lmctruck.com) and Classic Parts (www.classicparts.com). I recently installed this weather-strip behind the door panels on a '66 Chevy K10 truck we recently restored. I stuck it on with 3M strip caulk, that I bought from Eastwood (www.eastwood.com).

The screws are clutch head and you can get tips for them from Fastenal. You can get the screws from the hardware section of many local hardware stores, like Ace, True Value and sometimes the big box stores, like The Home Depot or Lowe's.

Look inside the door on the passenger side and you will see the backing plate for the mirror. I have installed a passenger side mirror on several trucks by backing the screws up with a flat washer, lock washer and nut. The small mirrors are available from:

The three bolts are from the top right door hinge on the inside.

Yep, soak in PB-Blaster and a good pair of vise grips worked for me on the really tough ones

Hi jonzcustomshop: Thanks for the pics...i see what you guys are talking about now. Even though not every door had those types of mirrors, they still have the holes where they'd mount.

so can you get a 90 degree drill in there, or do you have to measure and mark and drill from the outside??

I think you have to measure, mark and drill. That's how I did it anyway.

Ya... the folks at a few of the stores looked at me like I was from Mars! I went to 5 or 6 places before I found the size I needed for the carb... it was very irritating...

I made a paper template from the driver's side hole location and transferred it to the passenger side... missed just a little but it was close. Problem= it puts my stock small round mirror in a place where the vent window post is right in the middle of the mirror when viewed from the driver seat. So I recommend some experimenting with the passenger side mirror location. Perhaps someone with a truck with a factory passenger mrror could take some measurements and provide a location template... the passenger side location might need to be slightly different from the driver side. (LilRed66... any input?)

I thought that the rh mirror brackets have a different bend just for that reason....I know for sure the 55-6-7 do.

I bought a 64-66 mirror/bracket set from Brothers and the brackets look perfectly symmetrical. Doesn't mean you aren't right though... aftermarket can have it wrong sometimes. Hope others with experience will offer opinions on this.
