my is frame painted with rattle can question
The previous owner painted the frame with rattle cans. After he had it sand blasted. My question is do I need to take it back down to bare metal or just scuff it up real well?
I know that rattle can paint is not as good as real paint. So is it going to cause a problem being under a product like por 15 and chassis black? The PO said he put 2-3 coats of primer then there is 1 coat of stupid silver on the top. Rustoleum is the brand he said he used. |

Re: my is frame painted with rattle can question
IIRC, and its been about 5 yrs now, POR15 needs bare or sand blasted metal to adhere properly. The running boards of my 2N ford tractor, all I did was a wire wheel on a drill the heavy rust off. Its holding up ok but it aint no trailer queen.

My 69 stepper has been done the same way. I know I have to strip it down and start all over again. Thats the only POR-15 is going to stick.

Re: my is frame painted with rattle can question
Thats what I was afraid of consitering I dont have aceass to a sandblaster.
So whats everyones oppinion on paint stripers such as the aircraft stuff? Would that be good enough to take it down to bare metal? Perhaps I should just get all my frame mods done and send it off to be sandblasted and powdercoated......... |

That's the best idea! If your doing mods to the frame, why would you paint it now?

Re: my is frame painted with rattle can question
IM not panting it now. I just thought about the rattle can paint the other day and realized Id probably have to strip it back to bare metal. It would suck to get everything done then a year from finished the rattle can paint start releasing on me. Call it foresight if you will. I doubt Ill get it powder coated though. Thats probably out of my budget.

Re: my is frame painted with rattle can question
I have to voice another opinion. I have used POR 15 several times on many frames. It does not stick worth a darn to a nice clean frame. If you sandblast the frame, I would go ahead and let it flash rust. POR 15 is designed to be used over rust. If it were my frame, I would sand down the whole frame (using like 50 - 80 grit), not all the paint away, just really rough and then let it sit outside, or spray some water on it and let it sit for a few days. Then POR 15 the frame. If you put it on a smooth fame it will peel right off.

Re: my is frame painted with rattle can question
You should rough it up & use a good etching primer.

Re: my is frame painted with rattle can question
Put some chemical stripper on it, wash it off, let it flash rust a little, then POR 15.....done.
