Help me do the math....

Im thinking about getting an economy car because of the gas prices, so I went looking yesterday, or the day before...which ever day Friday was. But half way there I stopped. Turned around and came straight home, with a small detour to the Gunnery.

But it hit me, my truck is paid off. I pay just under $70 a month for full coverage, the only bill I have truck wise is my $30 a day gas bill so I can make the 80 mile round trip to work and back.

The truck Ive been looking at everyday on my way to work was an 01 Xtreme Blazer for $9500. That comes out to around $300 a month, not to mention the extra high insurance for the "new" vehicle, and I would have to get full coverage since it would have a lein on it. But I would also get the multi car discount too....

So would it be cheaper to buy an economy car? Or just keep feeding my truck gas?

i think in the long run youd be better off with that new truck, but it would be a couple years before it would start to pay off, if u really want to go economy and save money find an 80's ford festiva, i have one and i pull off about 40 mpg when i beat on the little car i paid 50 bucks for it find a deal like that if u want the mpg tp pay off right away

You would have to get something that gets 40+ MPG for it to be of any benefit. My Malibu gets 30 MPG commuting with a $382 payment, insurance, taxes... either of my big block trucks that are paid for would not cost more to drive overall.

I think the Extreme would pull alot more out of your paycheck than your current truck does

Yeah, about $130/week (890mi) in the car and $100/wk in the wife's suburban has me looking for 40+mpg. I'm thinking something ~$2k will pay for itself in 6-8 months no matter which one drives it. Save $240/mo in the sub, $320/mo in the car. Just figure out how soon you want it to pay off and if you can be comfortable enough with the change. 1-1.5 hrs a day in a sardine can might not be worth it.

if you use 30 bucks a day thats 7.5 gallons at 4 bucks a gal. the blazer might get 20 mpgs then it will take 4 gal to go the 80 miles. then 16 bucks a day with the blazer. you would save 14 a day times 22 days a month is 308 a month in gas. i dont know what a blazer gets for mileage might be less.

plus 9500 seems high should be easy to talkem down.

IMO opinion that's an awful lot for something that's seven years old no matter what the condition.
