anybody cut the upper crossmember spring pocket?

Whats happening?? I am looking at ways to get my current 67 project lower in the front... Its bagged with a kp notch in the rear.. I am on the fence about z'ing the frame right now.. I may go that way but at this point not ready to make the cut... I see a lot of guys are cutting the lower control arms apart and welding a cup for the bag to sit lower in.... Has anyone cut the upper side of the crossmember where the plate/bag mount bolts in and move it up higher? Looking at the frame it looks like it should work... I know you can never run a coil spring again but thats not an issue... Thoughts???

Look at the second pic for an Idea of what I mean... (jacked from backyard88's build thread.. Thanks... )

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Re: anybody cut the upper crossmember spring pocket?

There is a guy around here that did it too. The only thing I noticed is that he had alot more negative camber then I did. Just Z it and get it over with.

I cut the cups off flush, then plated it and added these upper mounts.

I did 3 to be safe but I'd think 2.5 would work. Although, what's another .5 inch Better safe than sorry

That .500" could be the difference between making a new trans tunnel because everything hits or tweaking the exisitng tunnel because one area hits....

I def. see where you're coming from. In my case I'm already doing enough cutting on the frame that some extra sheet metal work is no biggie. I also bought a high hump cover just in case

Well, like SCOTI said, it may cause you more work on the tunnel if you do. I don't have much factory stuff on mine anymore(engine mounts etc) so I just made sure I could get the frame down and I'll tackle the rest as I go. I guess it just depends on how much work you're willing to do. If it's a concern for you, mock it up and don't do more than what you need

Re: anybody cut the upper crossmember spring pocket?

Once I get it to lay I am afraid I will want to pull my 68 off of the frame and swap it over!!!
