best paint stripper

What is the best paint stripper to use and where do you buy it? I'd like to get away from having to scrape it 4 or 5 times. The flat spots aren't that bad, but the nicks and crannys kill me. What's the best?

Re: best paint stripper

Aircraft stipper, without a doubt. Very smelly. Use gloves. Most auto parts stores have it.

Re: best paint stripper

i also use the aircraft paint remover. not only does it remove paint, it also disolves grease, gunk, carbon and oil buildup on engine components.

Re: best paint stripper

Mr Muscle oven cleaner to clean parts. Use it outside spray on and keep wet. Keep wet twice recommended time and pressure wash it off. This is how I get things ready for powder coat. I stripped black off GMC grill with aerosol can of aircraft stripper from NAPA.

Re: best paint stripper

which ever you use, put a trash bag or some other plastic over what you applied to keep the stripper wet and keeps the fumes under cooking the paint off.

Re: best paint stripper

I find that the best paint stripper is to hire some punk for min wage and put him to work with a sander....

Chemical stripping is a MESS! It sucks, no matter what you use and how you do it. And there is no such thing as a 100% paint stripper, they always leave something left that needs to be sanded off so... I'm going to recommend a 8" hawg with 80 or 40 grit. Keep it flat and then finish with 80-150 6" DA. Alot of work yes, but at least you won't have the goo left over from the chemicals.

Re: best paint stripper

you could also hire some ILLEGALS. Of course, they would strip it down so good you'd need some concrete blocks to keep it off the ground!

Re: best paint stripper

I have used a product called "Dads" comes in a dark blur can and usually comes with a small pump bottle sprayer spray a 2ft sq area cover with sarna wrap (you can see thru and see it working) uncover scrape redo and move on them when most of the heavy stuff is off scrub with steel wool and wipe clean with box of rags paper rags LOTS of work then you should detergent and hot water wash LOTS more work You start to rethink using a professional stripping service the next time! But it can be dun !

Re: best paint stripper

i have found that aircraft stripper works well .... i also use as wire wheel on a variable speed drill instead of a scraper... i can be real messy if you try it with a wire wheel on an angle grinder! if you take your time with the drill and wire wheel you can get it down to bare metal and it even eats through body filler at the same time. wear long sleeves!

Re: best paint stripper

what about that soda blaster that they used on trucks

I want one if it really works like that

you can buy it at eastwood

any of you guys have to start pushing people out of your garage because of the cost of letting people use your stuff

Re: best paint stripper

I started sanding the hood down on my truck using a 4" palm sander and gave up after a couple of hours. lol. I have at least 8 layers of paint i'm cutting through. Guys at work keep saying to use the aircraft paint stripper found at the parts stores. My concern was with the waste of this stuff. If it burns skin, what is it going to do to my driveway when i hose it off? i don't want it seeping into the yard or gutter. Or does this stuff all dilute with water?

Re: best paint stripper

The latest news is soda blasting is out ... apparently it's been discovered that paint does not stick well to sheet metal that has been stripped with soda and there is practically no way to clean it well enough to over come this.

Re: best paint stripper

aircraft remover for sure...i sprayed two coats of that on my frame and scraped/pressure washed between coats and it looks just as good as sandblasting, im sure it will work great for body parts as well, sure beats sanding but wear gloves and safety glasses for sure, its some nasty stuff it will burn your skin almost instantly if you get it on you....trust me i know. and if you get it in your eye.... i can only imagine

Re: best paint stripper

so aircraft paint remover is basically like sandblasting just with a chemical? hmm, where can you get the kind that comes sprayable? I seen the kind at the paint store but I didn't know you can spray it...you just put it in your gun? also, would it strip factory caulk and stuff...like the crap they stick in the hatch area of the suburbans?

When did this news come out? I have been out of the hobby for a little while. Is there an article somewhere that I could read on it?

not anything you can read about it. It has just kind of filtered through. Soda blasting has been out long enough now for people to see the results happening. The soda is caustic. if you dont get it cleaned off and out of EVERY crack and crevice it will sit there and eat away at the metal. It will cause a completely redone car to rot out in just a few years.Even if they are stored inside. The soda attracts and retains moisture. Most paint manufacturers will specify on there tech sheets not to use there products on soda blasted metal. I, personally, think it is because of prep and not because of the products not working. They are covering there butts because too many jobs have come back because people DID NOT prep the vehicle right after having soda blasted. Media blasting with plastic/glass beads is the best way.
