How many is too many?

I recently just joined the '71 short fleet club and was wondering how many vehicles is too many. I'm just a single guy with two daughters and have six vehicles. My new '71 which is a project vehicle (which does run and drive), a '72 nova for car shows and cruise-in's, a '99 Silverado Ext. can 4x4 for family trips or wherever, a '02 Astro van for work, a '99 astro van for back-up in case my work van quits on me, and a '99 Honda shadow motorcycle (because i can't afford a harley) for cruising and enjoying the weather. My insurance company can't seem to understand me, neither does anyone else. Am i an addict or do others have this many vehicles also? How many rides is to many?

Re: How many is too many?

I'm tagging and insuring 9 at the moment, and I have 18 more that either junkers, parts vehicles, or non running projects. So no, you don't have too many!

BTW, Welcome to the board, but careful! - because 17 of the 27 vehicles I currently own are 67-72 Chevy and GMC trucks. They are very addictive!

Re: How many is too many?

Most I've ever owned is three at a time, but if I could afford and had the room for more I would. With 3, I have just enough room to move em around and still have room to work on one. Kinda like those little puzzles you had as a kid.... And why is your insurance company concerned? They're getting free money from you!

Re: How many is too many?

Well, If you want the real rundown here how it goes around my house.

57 3100 runs/drives waiting in line for restore after the longhorn.

71 Longhorn almost done, Will be the rig for the cruise ins maybe a couple shows then It will be towing the matching 06 24' enclosed trailer.

78 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 lifted with 35's is my wifes truck. Its been downgraded from her daily driver to the once in a while or hauling firewood.

01 GMC 4dr 2500 for pulling the 06trailer right now and riding more people to the dunes and track to go riding.

01 Hyundai accent for obvious reasons at 40 mpg

99 Jeep grand Cherokee limited. around town rig and sell real estate out of this one. Nicer to drive then the gas saver but no necessary to drive the 4dr 2500 that gets 8 mpg.

Then the bikes......

04 YFZ 450 Wifes race bike
06 YFZ 450 w. Long travel and a few more goodies. is my race bike
06 CRF150 wifes woods bike
04 YZ250f My woods bike
06 Rhino our trail,woods,track hauler.
86 250r w/zx6 motor is the sand duner.

And taking up more room is a 16' 06 car trailer again for obvious reasons you always need one of these handy with a winch mounted on the tongue

Well, this is how it was 2 months ago. I sold all the bikes but the 2 450's and Rhino. Other then that, That pretty much suits the two of us with no kids.

In other words your not alone. I always have my eyes open for something else I cant pass up.

Key is: make sure they are paid for. Only owe 8k on the K2500, 7k on the Jeep. other then that they are all paid off.

In my opinion as long as they are classics, you can never have to many! The only reason I didn't include the new vehicles is due to the insurance...

The wife complained with one project, so got rid of it (the wife) and got 3 VW's, 4 chevys, and 1 GMC.

New wife tobe already knows what happens when I have to get rid of a project. She better not ask.

Re: How many is too many?

99 S-10-Daily driver
00 Z71-Lowe's runner/boat tower
67 C-10 restored weekend cruiser
99 Corolla-Jena's car, long trip vehicle
05 Tacoma-Jena's truck that never gets driven It was bought April 'o4 and has 8,600 miles on it. I put about 6K of them on it

So, yeah, never too many. We're not married yet, but I have comp/collision on the top 3 and I'm paying $1,800/year for insurance. Thinking about dropping the Z71 to liability and putting the 67 on classic when I buy a house (that will drop it to $1,300/year.) Don't know what will happen when we combine everything, it may be 3K/year

Re: How many is too many?

my count is
(1) '69 GMC (project)
(1) '69 C-10 (fun retro driver)
'88 K-5 (spare vehicle and lake toy)
'75 Cheyenne (project),
'06 F-150 (DD )
'03 Sable (wifey's)
'69 Camaro (race car)

then - too many motorcycles to list

so no, you don't have too many dude, your sitting about right

My opinion of too many vehicles is having more than you will physically ever get around to restoring or hot-rodding in your lifetime.
If they all have some sort of purpose , then they are good (even if the only purpose is to part it out), but having 40 in the backyard rotting away with "I'll get to it someday" excuses is closer to having an unlicensed junkyard,

Re: How many is too many?

Welcome to the board.

I asked myself that very question not long ago and realized there are never too many. I will see if I can remember the ones I have.

'67 Chevy C-20 lwb soon to be a C-10 swb stepper.
'71 Chevy C-10 farm truck-hauling stuff around the farm.
'77 GMC 6500 Tilt-Cab dump truck.
'86 Toyota 4-Runner 4X4-used when 2 wheel drive is not enough.
'92 GMC K-3500 GMC Dually-trailer puller.
'93 Toyota Camry-good mileage.
'06 Mecury Grand Marquis-Wife's daily driver.
'53 Ford Jubilee farm tractor.
'72 International Cub Lo-boy with 60" mowing deck.
'06 Kawasaki Prairie 360 4-wheeler.

As you can see they all are special purpose vehicles and as said before there are never too many because I am always on the look out for more 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks.
