frame prep.. rivets..
so my frame needs lots of massaging with the flapper wheel to get rid of 38 years worth of rust and dust, and I was just wondering what you guys think of drilling out the rivets in the crossmembers and removing them for prep and paint, then reinstalling them with gr.8 or higher hardware?...
has anyone done it? pics? and what is the best way to go about it? thanks in advance!! Andy

 You building a show truck? You can look in the suspension forums there is a thread about removing the rivets.

I grind the heads off with and angle grinder. Then popped the rivet out with a punch and a hammer.

In addition to my auto tranny cross member, I did an entire leafs to coils swap and used all Grade 8 hardware including the trailing arm brackets on the main crossmember. Go for it , Grade 8 bolts will do the job.

I have replace rivets with grade 8 on a 74 f100 and used it as a work truck for many years.I used lock washers then set the nut with a punch and they never moved.

You can use a pnuematic cut-off tool to make an "X" on the head, then a couple taps with an air chisel and they pop right off of there.

I wouldn't use grade 8 bolts. They are too brittle and when your frame is flexing they could enlarge the hole. Rivets are manufactured from soft tooled steel, and used to maintain the flexibility of the frame without stressing the holes. Bolts that are too hard can brake, and the can be very abrasive to the holes themselves. I always use grade 5. WES
