Re: powder coat guys

you cant use regular body putty but you can use something like evercoats "metal to metal" filler or some guys use"allmetal"//eastwood carries both
scratchets?depends how thick the powder is laid down and weather the coater does single or multi coats //on some of my show bikes i've had them coat it thick then i've wetsanded and had them second coat for the finished product// i've had no problems over 80grit paper marks but gotten alot more perfect results with 500sanding

Re: powder coat guys

I wonder if JB weld would work? It's metalic right? I think its even temperature resistant up to 500 degrees.

When I coat stuff, I let it flow out at 450, so your filler also has to be able to withstand that.

im gonna dissagree with most of what is said......the "think magnetic" made me think, we powder coat (actually farmout) lots of aluminum parts for aircraft, and alumnium isnt magnetic....then i did some good ol googleing and found that they can PC most any surface, such as glass, bone, and wood just to name a few.......so im thinkin a filler like "all metal" would work...???

Re: powder coat guys

Not to be a jerk 68 short step. You can't powder coat glass or bone or wood, the reason being is that you use an electrical charge to get the Powder to stick to the metal. I use to be a metal prep. tech. ( Fancy Title HUH) jk. And we did have to use a special metal to metal filler for Powder Coating.

You sure about that......
I get a powder coat magazine for shops that do powder coating that highlights all the new stuff that they do.
I'll get a link and post it up. http://www.metalfinishing.com/index.html I haven’t tried searching this site, but they have very informative articles on new technologies in powder coating. I’m sure they can be found on their site.

Re: powder coat guys

I'll throw in a bit here...

I'm pretty sure anything that can withstand the flow-out temp can be coated. You Just need the electrical charge to draw the powder to the part so you get good coverage. I've coated small parts such as bolts and such, and have used a drilled block of wood to hold them while coating and baking. The powder sits on the wood and flows out just as it would on anything else. So I know you can coat wood, but coverage can be strange without the electrical charging.

Anyway seems like bondo would shrink up under that kind of heat anyway.

Re: powder coat guys

I have used JB weld before with good results the powder does stick to it. Here is a company I use for supplies and this is their metall filler page:

Re: powder coat guys

I asked about getting my grille powder coated. I was told that the near-chrome stuff, just wasn't quite right for the look I wanted. So, he suggested a trip to Sherwin-Williams automotive paint store to pick up a Wheel Polishing Kit.

Basically, you have to sand out as many of the surface imperfections as possible, then start polishing the aluminum. Eastwook sells some stuff that is designed to remove the anodizing, but I've read on here that Oven Cleaner will, too.

I have not started on my grille yet, but it's gonna happen.

Seems like Zoop's has a sealer of some sort that is supposed to last for several years, that I will try out.

It was my desire to NOT pay for a new grille that lead to this decision. Having a restorer to work on it would have been just as expensive, too.

It has nothing to do with being magnetic. From the method of powercoating I am familiar with the only thing that matters is the the material being able to conduct a charge. It is a misconception that aluminum, glass, plastic or even wood do not conduct electricity. They do, just not the the extent that steel or copper do.
