OK, just outside now on a lovely sunny Sunday changing the gasket on my Trans pan...never done this before and never seen inside one of these before so when I saw this thing hanging loose I paniced. Should it be loose or is there something badly wrong?.

I don't know how much filter function you are losing, but it definitely isn't doing much good that way.

Should be held in place snug by the bolt it's rattling around on. You are going to replace it ain't ya?

just replace the filter you'll be fine

Eightbanger,
Your filter is ok like that. It will work just fine.

It is missing the special shouldered bolt that often gets lost during transmission filter changes.

You can make a sleeve for your existing bolt out of a small steel tube. Cut it just long enough to hold the filter level and tight without the pan in place. Tighten your existing bolt gently against the bottom of the new filter using a lock washer or locktite.

The TH400 filter inlet is on the top of the filter not the bottom.

The filter did look like it was ok but that's the first time i've seen it, I did'nt get a new filter so it will have to go back for now...Arad68 i'm gona go with what you have said the small bolt that is there does have a shoulder and only threaded part way down so seems to be the correct one, but still this did not look like it was right I will try to make up a small spacer for it now so thanks for your help, and to everyone else.

No sweat dude! I was a little bent when I first saw this myself.

The TH400 has a great reputation as one of the most durable transmissions ever built. Don't let this bother you too much. It is still a great trans!!

Thats how they are soposed to be. The pickup tube that joins the filter to the trans might be a bit loose. The filter rests on the pan when its all togeather, so it doesn't flop around like that when the pan is on.
