Hubcap idea...

I eventually want to make my '73 look "stockish", other than being lowered. I'm even going to stick with the green/white color combo that it came with. I have a set of 17" Centerlines that I'm gonna run on it as I work on it but want to change to a set of truck rallys with Radial T/A's later on. Surfing the net I found a few places that sell the original "Deluxe" wheel cover that the build sticker says it came with back in '73, pictured below. I'm looking for opinions... How would these caps look on 15x8" wheels with some Radial T/A's (about 235/70r15's)??? Has anyone ever tried or seen this??

Thanks! jc

Re: Hubcap idea...

I saw a guy that put a set of those on his 73 1/2 ton 4x4 about 25 years ago. He put them over the top of his 15X8 white wagon wheels that were rusting. I believe he had 32-11.50s on it if memory serves right. It didn't look too bad, but it's not something that I would have done. Wish I had some pictures of it, but unfortunately I don't. I think that they would look right for what you want to do, especially since your truck came with them and you're after a stock look. Just my opinion and I hope it helps. ...Joe

Re: Hubcap idea...

I put them on my steelies when I first did the drop on my 74. I had swapped the stock front rotors to some that were re-drilled/machined for a car pattern but my TT2's didn't have any lug nuts w/locks so I didn't want to run them yet. I had some 15x6" car pattern vette ralleys up front & had the 15x8" truck ralleys in the back (205-75's & 275-60's).

I'm a steelies/hub cap guy to the core. If the ride is set-up right, I feel some 15's can look as good as a set of billet 20" rims. That being said, I didn't care for the look of the full wheel covers on there. Some dog-dish caps on solid steelies would have looked good though....

Re: Hubcap idea...

I have those on my '73 stepside. I like them. I found them on ebay and got a full set of 4 for 125.00. NOS too. I could post pictures if you like.

I remember my dad laughing about a guy with a flat, trying to loosen the "lug nuts" on those caps...

Re: Hubcap idea...

Goofy stock hubcaps can look cool. I've left mine on and with whites the 70's era goof factor is through the roof, so much so that I think it's cool.

Saw a red truck with rallys, centers painted red, wearing wide whites. Otherwise it was stock. Now that was a good look!

Ever consider redline tires like the 60's and early 70's muscle cars had? Those with some stock rallys might be cool.

Re: Hubcap idea...

Red stripes are a great idea! They are pricey though.. I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'll probably run the 8" rally's and later on if come across a set of those hubcaps, and can slap those on and alternate the look now and again... The picture I have in my mind looks pretty cool, I have to try it...
