When is too much is too much (rust)
I have a 69 stepside that I currently use as my daily driver, i love the truck and plan to slowly restore it...however due to my own perfectionist issues I am going to have to contract most of the body work out.
My question is this... How much rust is too much when it comes to the cab , what is considered repairable, when does it just make more sense to find a new cab. I have rust issues in: the back corners (which seems pretty common) floor pans (again pretty common) Across the top of my winsheild. This is really the one that scares me..right now I have silicone keeping the water from coming in. I love this truck and plan to fix it one way or the other, Im just looking for opinions on doing it well. I will try to attach photos later. Thanks in advance for all of your help. |

Re: When is too much is too much (rust)
The bad thing about that roof rust is that the metal is layered up there. It's almost impossible to get it all out to keep it from coming back. Mine was pretty rusty so I found another cab without the rust in the roof. Another option would be to find one with a good roof and cut it off at the posts and just replace just the roof. IMO, it would probably be cheaper to find a cab without the roof rust than to pay someone else to repair it.

Re: When is too much is too much (rust)
tough question...
If you are sending it out for all the bodywork then I would say more than a simple floor patch or rockers would be grounds for buying a new cab. look at my build thread... My floor is so bad it needs to be totally replaced ($450 for a new floor), rockers ($40), cab corners ($40), vent areas repaired (no parts for that). I don't have great welding skills but for the $600 I spent on a new welder, it will pay for itself after this project. if I had the time I would even drive to Arizona and bring back a "rust free" truck just to use the body panels... $1,000 for a rust free cab is worth it....
