Does this support bearing look bad?

I am getting real bad vibration when cruising at 3800-4000 rpm and it's not from the tires. I replaced center support bearing 2000miles ago. I think it's coming from the driveshaft. I suspect a bad support bearing again.

Re: Does this support bearing look bad?

Coming from someone who just had their driveshaft break just forward of the bearing I'd say yeah it looks like the boot that holds the bearing centered has let loose. The removable yoke doesn't look like it's centered. That thing is probably hopping around in there.

crawl under there and grab the shaft, push, pull, twist, jerk on it, just give it hell. If it clunks, time to see your friendly drive shaft shop.

Re: Does this support bearing look bad?

Did you replace ALL the u-joints when you did the carrier bearing? If not I'd bet that's the problem.

What the heck is going on here I no sooner posted on the prior thread regarding Center Support Bearing and ran into this thread. Is this always a problem or am I just taking notice to this issue because it happened to me?

The last post in a thread bumps it to the top of that forum. If you check the times of the posts they are not too far apart, so you would see them fairly close together in the forum. If your post is less than 5 minutes apart from another poster in the same thread you may not see his post until after you submit yours. You both could be saying pretty much the same thing but one post will show before the other. With 30,000 plus members a lot of posts are going into these threads. Don't worry about it. If you need a more detailed explanation PM a mod or administrator.

Re: Does this support bearing look bad?

I understand how the threads are posted. I was actually referring to the Center Bearing it self…is this always been a problem with our trucks?

Re: Does this support bearing look bad?

Center support bearings are a common problem.Mostly because they are 40 years old and not everyone realizes the driveline must be timed/indexed/phased properly. Many times PO's did U-Joints themselves and did not keep them phased.I am giving generalizations here since I don't know what your situation is.If the rear half was installed 180* out from it's original balance point then the driveshaft will be unbalanced. Most have found that a drivelline set up by a pro shop will last years but many have done their own and gotten only a few months from them.Hope this helps with info on driveline problems, even though it doesn't solve them.

Re: Does this support bearing look bad?

I marked it all before replacing u-joints and a center support bearing. I also used a press. Before I had a 3.08 gears and vibration was barelly there. After installing 4.10 gears I can feel a lot more. Anyway that bearing has a life time warranty. Hopefully it's just a faulty bearing.

Re: Does this support bearing look bad?

If your vibration got worse when going from 3.08 to 4.10 gears you have a balance issue. Your driveshaft is now spinning much faster at any given road speed making the imbalance more noticeable. The same imbalance will fatigue the rubber style carrier bearing very quickly, making the vibration felt even worse yet. Replace the carrier, have the driveline dynamically balanced and you'll be set.
