please do not circumvent the site word filters, thank you
so ahem well..
was with my little bro who wants to get a 4x4 soon... well i was showing off talkin smack and stuff while spitting up mud everywhere and my right front 37oncher caught a dry rutt on the edge of the mud puddle and well snapped my axel shafts (inner and outer and god knows where th u joint went) so... what r yoru reccomendations? (affordable) i do beat on teh truck fairly well but it has the corporate 10 front (8bolt hub) off and 84 diesel and the 14 bolt SF rear off that 84 also.. so... wher should i get th enew axelshafts from? not sure what spline count they are it's gonna be a few days before i can get to them.. but i can post a pretty picture of the nice invisible u joint =-) so.. hmm Junk yard? or lmc or an off road shop? or heck if any of you guys got extras he he he well lemmie know.. my wife still dosent know.. soo yeah lets hope for the best

Alloy USA/Superior/Yukon makes a decent set of Chromo axle shafts. I would also run a CTM ujoint. I buy my stuff from http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/home.php |

Re: I f-ed up showing off
i would much rather preffer going for a D 60 but got stuff going on next time around m going for smaller tires i diddnt think it through well enough
and it's not a diesel i took the axels from a 84 diesel.. it's a 83 1/2t with a 350 in it and 4 spd.. im usually "within tolerances" but i was goofing too hard and paid the price and when i did the swap i was in a bind and couldn't find a "affordable" pair of axels grrrr

Re: I f-ed up showing off
Stock replacement from bone yard, not positive but a dana 44 1/2 ton may work as I was under the impession that the 1/2-3/4 ton dana 44 is the same, Oh wait not a dana, or is it?? (10-bolt?) Chromoly is the best bet for the front if you can $$$, but stocker will get you going and fairly cheap??

Re: I f-ed up showing off
I can tell you that the axles shafts aren't the same for the Dana 44 and Corp 10. I have an extra set to a 44 but don't think they will work. I tried to install them in my corp 10 1/2 ton and realized the diff on the corp 10 is about 1" inward, meaning the pass side axle is 1" longer and the driver side is 1" shorter than the Dana 44 I was using for parts.
This might be different for 3/4 tons but was tru for my 1/2 ton. The outer knuckles, spindles, rotors and such are the same. The brake line is metric on corp10 and standard on dana44. Good luck, Might be easier to pull an entire axle from the yard for $150 (same gearing of course) and swap brakes. Getting the spindles off mine was an intersteing endeavor.

Re: I f-ed up showing off
ok well im pulling a brain fart..
what trucks came with the D44 fronts? will the lug pattern match my existing rims? (really cant afford new ones) and .. what gear ratios came ? will my new brakes transffer over ? sorry for the bombardment.. resources would be good enough for me.. and i'll figure it out from there..

Re: I f-ed up showing off
I wouldn't make this any harder than you have to. Get yourself a replacement axle for the one you have and "take it easy" on it. That will get you functional again and give you a complete axle that you could sell in the future to recouperate some of your money when you up-grade to a D60.
A Dana44 is not any stronger than what you already have and Chevrolet hasn't used them on more than 30 years. It is just not worth the hassle to try to find one with the right gear then have to deal with possibly rebuilding it. BTW, please go easy with the language. This is a family friendly site. I realize that the actual word is not there, but deliberate "mis spells" are not good either. Last edited by LONGHAIR; 06-30-2008 at 07:42 PM. |

Re: I f-ed up showing off
Yeah, that is what I was saying, just replace the axle, but you need to know what you have first then go from there. If I am not mistaken the 3/4 ton axle never was a 10-bolt (except on the diff cover, but those # of bolts doesn't mean 10 bolt, technically) the dana 44 is the most common 1/2-3/4 front diff on these year trucks. How's about a pict of the center section and one of the hub. Just find a good used axle and move on and save the $$$ for a Dana 60 if you intend to get it!

Re: I f-ed up showing off
dana 44 went to 78 or 79, then switched over. All the good parts will switch over, or just buy better axle shafts for yours... then you know all the guts are good and you have a stronger axle.
check ord.com or similar site..

Re: I f-ed up showing off
the axels are from an 84 diesel suburban. . . i no longer have the vin and truck's been scrapped since...
i should have saved it.. dont have the options sticker either the truck was pretty stripped and the freaking diff cover looks pretty much the exact same as the corporate 10 i took off the 83 (which now has the 84 diesel axles)

Re: please do not circumvent the site word filters, thank you
Your u-joint went and caused the yokes to slap around, most likely.I`d go with chromoly shafts and CTM u-joints.Since you are just over the 35" tire limit most agree on for a D44/10-bolt,you`ll have a pretty decent set-up.You just did your brakes. That`s what I`d do.If you go with a Dana60 later you`ll have a decent axle to sell. Not just another dime a dozen 10-bolt.Also,replace those inner spindle bearings. Not much to them and they carry the outer end of the inner axle.

Re: please do not circumvent the site word filters, thank you
Is that gear lube on the knuckle? If so then you might have broken the inner axle seal.... That takes a little more to change if so.
That's a 10-bolt, I agree with just upgrading it a little and keep on wheeling. NAPA sell bearing kits that will have the spindle bearing and seals for you. http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...+-+Front+Wheel

Re: please do not circumvent the site word filters, thank you
For some spindles you can "borrow" an adapter from the cheap parts stores that threads onto and spindle and a slide hammer that pops it off in a few seconds. Better than hours of beating on it...
