Help Identify rear axle.....please?

Have an 86 Crew Cab dually....seals are leaking and trying to identify rear axle. I think it is a dana 60 or 70.....looked on several sites to try and identify and all say identifying numbers are on the support webs and the right axle tube(on the side the cover is on). Only numbers i have found were on the cover itself and the top left tube???? and i have just about wire brushed the whole thing. Here are the numbers I have on the rear cover 30809 161 5 and on the top left side of the tube 45A391 1NA also think i found the date code on it on the lower left web says 286(feb. 86?) Please help??!!

Re: Help Identify rear axle.....please?

It should be a 70 HD if it is the OE "wide track" axle in your truck. It should say 70 HD in one of the webs. It's a raised cast ID, not stamped.

can't find no other markings in the webs other than 286 and one that looks like it says HD in a diamond shape.

Well looked on the back side (side facing front of truck) and found 70HD on the top left web.......still cannot find build date or numbers to tell me what ratio.

Re: Help Identify rear axle.....please?

If the ratio tag is gone (they often don't get put back on w/ service (held on with a cover bolt) pull the cover & look on the edge of the ring gear. You will find a gear part #, ratio, and mfg. date. The ratio will be marked with ring & pinion tooth count- for example, 41 10 would be 41 tooth ring gear, 10 tooth pinion. 41 divided by 10= 4.10

I bet you will find 4:10's or 3.73's.

BTW, the 70 HD has its own specific pinion & carrier bearings, much larger than the 70 or 70 U.
