Re: Powerglide question

On the trans there is a little arm between the trans housing and the shift arm that needs a kickdown rod from the carb to that arm. When you floor the gass the little arm is pushed down by the rod conected to the carb an keeps the trans from shifting till later in the RPM band. The V8 powerglide has cooler lines that go to the trans cooler or radiator and the stright 6 powerglide has no lines just 2 holes in the bellhousing of the trans to let the air cool it.

My L6 Camaro PG has cooler lines running to the radiator, FWIW.

Re: Powerglide question

I just wanted to pop in and say I love a good powerglide. I have one in a 91 S-10 but its far from stock and is a full manual shift so I can't really help you but I love shifting 1 time and be done with it. They are a good racing tranny, never tried one on the street. I have to agree with tinkering with the side of the tranny, you can adjust things and get higher or lower rpm shifts that way.

Re: Powerglide question

Also check the vacuum modulator. It should have vacuum at the hose going to it when the engine is running. If there is any fluid in the vacuum hose the modulator is bad.

That's exactly what I've got in my Camaro. It's like a built in 'shift kit' and back when the engine was younger I could beat F*#d 289's.

Re: Powerglide question

When Chevy came out with the TurboGlide in '58, we were excited that we'd have something better than a PG. After all FoMoco had 3-speed automatics, and GM didn't. There were the Hydramatics that graced Olds, Pontiac and Cadillac, but those were much bigger transmissions. We Chevy fans didn't get a 3-speed automatic until the TurboHydramatic came out.

So, in retrospect, the aluminum case powerglide has an established presence in the racing world, as cited above.

The cast-iron PG......on the other hand.......oh, the TurboGlide? Died in '61. Nobody missed it, either. I mean, just what is "Grade Retard" doing for a gear selection? I know what it meat, but it got called "GRunt" gear.

Didn't we call them "Power Slides" at one time? It was better than a DynaFlow.
