Re: bought a old truck

I'd say take them loose from the rear wheel cylinders and find a plug that would fit it, and install it.

Someone else might say to take the brake line loose and bend/crimp it shut with enough force to contain the brake fluid. Principles of hydraulics says you can't compress a liquid. With enough pressure in that line, it will leak.

Take the line loose at the master cylinder and plug it there. With old brake fluid in the lines, they will absorb moisture and will have to be replaced.

as cheap and easy it is to buy new lines and bend them to fit, if it was my project, i wouldnt waste my time or effort doing a temperary hack job. thats just me

Re: bought a old truck

I think it should use a dual master cylinder if its 67 or newer, so only the fronts should work now... Of course, they may not work either.

I agree with trailwart above...

I agree with you both; I was just answering his question.

You never can tell what you'll find when you go to work on something that someone else has "fixed" in a pinch/bind/hurry.

Re: bought a old truck

It is a dual bowl master cylinder system where the front brakes are separate from the rear brakes. When fluid pressure is lost on one end of the vehicle the other ends' brakes still work. A safety designed into them. If your rear lines have rusted out the rear brakes are already disabled putting all of the braking duty on the front ones. The rear lines leaking should not stop the front ones from working so no line plugging is needed. Do I have to mention you don't want to drive it on the street like this?

Re: bought a old truck

Jim, I just looked at the original post and he's never said what he bought. Could be he's as old as we are, and an "old" truck is truly OLD!!! If I can't remember when it was new, it's old.

Then again, he's in Maine. Based on my observations in Rhode Island at the kids' house, anything that still runs that was built before 1980, is old.
