4x4 guys get in here

Heres the deal, I bought a 71 GMC K1500 today, so the title says. It has drum brakes, a rockwell t-case and 2 piece driveshaft, and the frame where the p/s box is has a raised dimple. I thought the 67-8 k10 frames had the dimple, but when i got home with it I looked at my 71 K10 (which i know is original) and its the same way. Wierd.

anyway, I still need to get the vin of the frame to see what year it is, but if the t-case and the right power steering is there its got to be a 69, right?

Re: 4x4 guys get in here

I would check the frame closely, the 67-68 K-frames/suspension are different than the 69-72 K-frames/susp. Is it an open or closed knuckle front end? Not positive but by 71 it should have had disk brakes?? and I think the rockwell was gone by this point, replaced by the 205.

You have an orig 71? How does the frame compare to the one you just bought? Any pics of the frame?

Exclamation Re: 4x4 guys get in here

Sounds like an early 71, which would be a late 70 model. That would explain the drum brakes on it.

Re: 4x4 guys get in here

sounds like a 69 frame and running gear. 67-8 would not have a dimpled frame for the p-s box. 70 would have open knuckle drum brake front axle but a 205 t-case not a rockwell, a 70 also has a one piece rear shaft.

Check the frame VIN. Should be on the driver's side, in the engine compartment. It's not the full VIN, just the last... 8 maybe? The numbers there should match the last numbers of the title/glovebox. Post the first six of your vin. The vin will give us a few clues.

Sounds like it's possible you have a '69 frame. A '69 would have all of the things you mentioned. 67-68s don't have a dimple. 67-69 have a rockwell t-case. A 69 would also have drum brakes... now, by drum brakes, you mean drums in the front? A 69 would also have a Dana 44 with closed knuckles in the front, and a GM 12-bolt in the rear.

Re: 4x4 guys get in here

Yep, Im sure its a 69 frame and running gear. The front axle is a drum brake dana 44 with closed knuckles, it does have the rockwell ( shifter is on the left of the 4 speed shifter) and it has the raised little dimples where the p/s box goes on... and I thought itf it were a 67/8 K frame it would have the ram assist p/s setup... this one has a setup just like my 71 K10. Another reason I think its a 69 is it has 69 style towhooks, and they look like there original to the frame. Someone probobly just put a newer body on, and sold me the 2wd title

I need to go out and see what the vin on the frame is.

Its the same, so maybe its a 69-72 frame or my 71, which I always thought was original isnt
