Re: Help AXLE Codes

If you will tell us what eng/trans you have someone will tell you what it would have came with new. Hard to tell after 40 yrs without pulling the cover. Could probably use an oil change anyhow. Welcome to the board.

Re: Help AXLE Codes

There might be some tags at the rear under the cover bolts that tell the ratio. They are small,so you might need GLASSES and or a flash light.

Re: Help AXLE Codes

Thank you and it is a 1968 3/4 ton GMC factory 396 th400 with a Dana 60 rear axle. this is actually my second truck sadly I had to part with my 70 GMC in an unconventional manner I blacked out while driving and rolled her 3 times and hit a telephone pole I wasn't ready to let go of that truck and it was hard but an S shaped frame was not going to be a feesable fix so my family got together and bought me this one though I did pick it out also i do have lots of usable parts from the 70 I need to get rid of so if you know anyone that needs them just ask about them I will get a list together any way thank you guys for the help

Re: Help AXLE Codes

Would that be the same as a factory 396 from 1968 cause I do know for a fact that it is a 1972 402 engine and trans. also here are some other codes from my build sheet maybe it can be narrowed down further for the Axle

the axle number is supposed to be a SP60 354 but after reading it and really looking at it it basically tells me that its a SP for Spicer 60 and the 354 for the gear ratio oh man thats a relief now can anyone tell me why the site that orange crush has posted says that 68 only had either a 4.10:1 or 4.26:1 but thank you guys so much for the help

Re: Help AXLE Codes

I dont know why that site doesn't show the 3.54:1 ratio. All 3/4 ton big blocktrucks 68-72 that had a/t had the ratio. Dont know about std trans trucks. 1/2 ton BB trucks w/auto came with 3.07:1. I have a redbook which lists all of the options doesn't show this ratio either.

Re: Help AXLE Codes

BBGMC the redbook is out of print, but you can usually find good used ones on amazon books.

Re: Help AXLE Codes

never head of the 4.26... 3.54, 4.10 and 4.56 was the 2 common gears on the 3/4 tons. there was a 5.13 or so also, but far and few between.
