Rear end breather

I know there is supposed to be a breather tube connected to the rearend, but I don't know how to connect it.

I took the rearend apart about a year ago, and I'm getting close to putting the bed back on, so I'd like to go ahead and finish up the rearend (fluid, brake lines, etc.) before I put the bed on.

On the top of the rearend there is a hole, is there a plastic or metal piece that is supposed to go in there? It's been too long

It's just a rubber hose...I don't know what size, but that's all it is. I used a hose clamp to hold it on. It runs up and bolts to the frame. Just make sure it's long enough so it has slack when the rear moves up and down.

There should be a fitting in the housing for the host to fit onto.. yours may be broken off.

yeah, there's no fitting. That's what I need, but since it's gone, I don't know what it looks like or where to get one.

I don't know about Washington. Down here, if they sit for awhile,
dirt dobbers will build their nest in the end and it will be plugged
with dirt.

There is supposed to be a small breather that plugs into the open end of the hose that prevents that... My wife has the camera or I would take a couple of pictures and post them... Maybe later.

hmm...didn't know that. I thought I had the solution in the beginning of this thread and now it seems I have a problem too!

My Dana doesn't have a breather..Never has, don't even know where I'd put one. should it?

My 68 12 bolt rearend has the hose, the breather, and is bolted to the underside of the bed.

so does anyone know where to get the fitting that goes into the rearend that the hose attaches to?

Camera's back so I went out and took a couple of pictures this morning. The rear end housing I had laying out back has a self contained breather (plugged up). First picture is of that breather, the second picture is the hole where it is mounted, and the third picture is of that breather and a breather from a hose setup. The rear ends with the hose type breather have a piece of metal tubing in the breather mounting hole and a piece of vacuum type hose slides on it and the breather fits in the end of the hose. As 68_chop_top said the breather end of the hose is fastened to the underside of the bed support cross member with a small clamp. I think these were used on vehicles for a lot of years so finding one at a salvage yard shouldn't be too tough.
