Sitting in a Parking lot...
So here's the story sitting in the local grocery shop (dillions) and some idiot in front of me just plain stops in the middle of the road, nothing in the way noone backing out..NOTHING TO STOP FOR!!! It irritated me. Thats the moment when i realized....oh crap....i don't have a working horn. So untill i can diagnose the problem i have one of those airhorns used at sporting events although fun to scare the hell out of bystanders with its not what i want as a permanent solution. so here's my question does anyone have a diagram as to how the horn and all is assembled in the colum? Thanks in advance for all your help!

Re: Sitting in a Parking lot...
My horn stopped working and it was the relay. Its to the right of the fuse box. About 2" x 1 1/2" rectangular silver relay. Secondly I would take the horn off and hook it to a battery charger or some 12v source and see if it works before I would assume its in the column. My guess would be its the relay.

Re: Sitting in a Parking lot...
Here's what I did on mine...
Check the wire going to the horn to make sure you get 12vdc when you press on the horn. If you do, then the horn is the problem. You can check it as rescam mentioned by applying 12vdc to the connector and ground the frame. If it has two terminals, then one goes to 12vdc and the other to ground. Check the relay to make sure it's working and you have 12vdc when pressing the horn. The next step is to remove the steering wheel and insure the horn contact is clean and has a good shiny surface. Mine was all rusty and wasn't making a good contact. |

Re: Sitting in a Parking lot...
DO NOT test the horn by running a 12v wire straight to it! It will scare the crap out of you if the horn is good... not that I did that or anything...

Re: Sitting in a Parking lot...
Or you could go the cheap/rigged up way I did. My horn itself was fine but the PO had an aftermarket steering wheel & no button horn stuff installed. So I just put a mounted a momentary push button at bottom edge of the dash & wired a hot to the horn...I know, but I was able to get an inspection sticker & it works!

Re: Sitting in a Parking lot...
When I bought my 69 chevy I didn't realize the previous owner had installed an "ahooga" horn. I drove it to my then girlfriend's house (now my wife). I stopped in front of her house and honked the horn to show off the truck. I was surprised when a loud "ahooga" sound came out of it.... Sad to say, I gave it to a friend. Wish I still had it...

Re: Sitting in a Parking lot...
If you go over to the FAQ section, I think at the very least, you'll find a discussion w/ pics on how to mix and match horn contacts when swapping columns and/or wheels.
The horn button supplies a ground to the horn relay, engaging the relay and applying power to the horn. Beep. Check for a faint click when you press the horn button and try applying a ground to the black wire on the relay. If it clicks, get under the hood and check the horn as stated above. |
