HELP with Alternator/charging system question...

Is there anything that would keep the electrical system from charging properly?
other than the alternator, or battery?

Yes my voltage reg is in the alt... Getting mine rebuilt, in the mean time, the one that O'Reilly gave me will not charge the battery...it just runs down...we checked it with another battery to eliminate the possibility of bad batt. and the voltage is not where it should be...about 12.4 volts and when lights are turned on, down to 11 and more with the stereo...it never recovers even when the gas pedal is depressed.

We even took it back off and had them test the rebuilt unit..it tested fine...unless its just the wrong one for my truck... I dunno. Getting my chrome one rebuilt today and having it turned into a 100AMP instead of 60 so hopfully i can avoid the dead alt again in the future.

Could the 25volts the bad alt was pushing through the system for about 10 miles have damaged anything else to keep the system from working properly??? Thanks and sorry for the book but I wanted to include everything.

Oh yeah.... it did melt down the fuseable link wire that is off the firewall out of the wire harness...I replaced that too.
p.s..its a 1 wire alt. just like my chrome one.

Im not totally positive but some alt have a feedback wire that tells the alt to start charging when the batt volt level gets down to a certain level. Maybe it is bad or burnt.

loose or slipping belts will cause a charging system to not work properly.

nOPE AND NOPE. HEHEHE
We bypassed the only wire on the alt..still no change in voltage at all. And the belt is tight....every time of the 3 we had it on/off !! lol
Keep em coming....
Im tellin you we spent 5 hours thinking and trying other stuff...eliminated all possible things..well. we thought so anyhow..> I still think the alt they gave me is not functioning properly.

Guess I will find out when I get my old one back. Damn!! $80 to rebuild it or $240 for a new one! DOh!

Keep the ideas coming...maybe we will hit on something I missed.

What does this mean? My first thought was that the second alternator isn't really a 1 wire design. If you need one before you get your original back, I would go get a stock one from the wrecking yard for $10 and wire it like stock to at least make the thing charge.

I'm pretty sure all you need is a wire that is on with the ignition to excite the field of the alternator and then the wire that goes to the postive post of the battery (usually via a connection at the starter).

Sounds like the second one wire alternator is shot.

Same thing we thought...they tested it after we put it on and took it back off/.tested fine....

We bypasssed the wire as a test to see if it would work..still no change.

Dave,

I would try and help but I'm the worlds worst when it comes to electrical stuff.

Only thing I can think of is the second alt is not working right. Just guessing with everyone else.
