clear windshield glass

I have contacted a couple of local shops for a new windshield but they tell me all they can get is a tinted windshield. Where can I pick up a clear one?

Re: clear windshield glass

All of the major parts catalogs for these trucks sell both clear and tinted (and green tinted, sometimes) glass. It would suck to have to pay for shipping, but if you can't find it locally, you might have to.

One way to save on shipping might be to have a local (or semi-local, if there is a bigger city near you) glass place check around with all of their suppliers and see if they can source one for you and order it. That way, you wouldn't have to pay shipping.

In an indirect way, we always pay for shipping unless it's a normally stocked item and they happend to be out. Nothing is free in business.

Plus in some cases the taxes are higher than the shipping costs...

Very true, but there are less shipping costs built into the price if they get a truckload of glass from their supplier every day. Ordering a windshield from a parts catalog to deliver to your house might cost $40-50 in shipping...the cost of shipping one windshield of 20 or 30 in a truckload to a glass shop isn't nearly as much, that's all. It's like having a local auto parts store order a part for you vs. ordering it yourself from a web site or catalog -- the benefits of them having a huge order come in from their warehouse every day can save you money.

Hmmmm, hadn't thought about that. Of course you're correct if it's an item that they don't have to special order.

In my case (not a windshield) they ordered it and I had to pay for the shipping (UPS)... This was an item that I couldn't find on the net at the time.

Re: clear windshield glass

ya, I called 7 different shops and they all tell me that the only ones they can get are tinted. I guess I'll have a tinted windshield and clear the rest of the way around.
