305 carb to 350 tbi swap questions
Well I've decided I like to take the good running 350tbi 700r4 complete motor trans wiring -all of it
from my parts 88 burb and pull it all over to my 83 short bed If anyone has done one of these please let me know how hard swapping the wiring and fuel set up is I'm pretty good at figuring things out but want to know if I will have to hack anything up to transfer it over or can I just carefully remove and replace the components from one truck to the other will the pump/pickup from the rear burb tank fit in the side mount 83 shorty tank or will I have to buy a side mount style pickup/pump? Any help or comments welcome my friends Mark Last edited by impalamark; 07-11-2008 at 10:12 AM. Reason: clarification |

About the pump, you could always just go to autozone.com and compare the part number for each pump.. alot easier than taking down both tanks. About the wiring, I've never done it, but I don't think it'd be very hard to pull the harness from the 88. Just mark each wire with some tape.

Don't forget to use the TV cable from the TBI set-up. The cables for carbs and TBI's are slightly different in length. I could not get the carb length cable adjusted correctly on a TBI.

I am trying to do this low budget avoiding buying a new pump and I edited my post to clarify I'm going to move the engine and tranny complete with all the wiring and fuel system if possible I wanted to know how easy the wiring harness and fuel system are to get out of the truck engine tranny are piece of cake If any one has experience I'd appreciate it Mark |

Re: 305 carb to 350 tbi swap questions
The pickups for the Burb/Blazer rear tank is different than a 87-95(I think) tank.
Fuel hosewill need to be upgraded to the EFI compatible hose, I would rob the ECU mount and weld it in the 83 pickup. If you have both sitting there it "shouldn't" be to difficult. The harness at the firewall should plug in, just check everything...

Re: 305 carb to 350 tbi swap questions
Thanks Capt.K
appreciate the thoughts I had some fun beginning to pull the wiring for the doors -the harnesses will be a good time this burb is giving up a ton of great parts and will really help the two others its donating to . Hard not to feel guilty about parting this thing MArk Last edited by impalamark; 07-11-2008 at 08:56 PM. |

Impalamark
1) I used 5 min epoxy to attach ECM bracket to undercowl sheet metal - same area were it was originally sitting in a donor truck, just behind and above glove box. 2) A 52mm sheet metal punch is the tool to get harness from engine bay into cab - hole saws are PITA. 3) Try to get in tank FP from EFI truck. Early tanks do not have baffles so a fuel slash is a problem. You can swap in 87 saddle tanks which have built in baffles. These are available from various sources brand new for about $130. 4) TBI system needs fuel return line - to make this swap work as if it was intended by the factory get a 3/8" soft steel tubbing for return line. Do not use 1/4 line used by the vapor return - charcoal canister for return! You should have a total of three lines going to your tank - Supply, return fuel and vapor. 5) TBI system need about 13 PSI (give or take) for a stock motor to be happy. You do not really need TPI rated fuel pump. FPR in TB will by pass excess fuel back to the tank, but re-circulated fuel will be heated up increasing fuel vapor pressure in a tank! 6) TBI system in early square body (and 700r4) improves fuel efficiency and driveability, but you have to solve fuel delivery system. //RF
