What's wrong with my steering shaft?

Can anyone tell from this pic whats wrong with my steering shaft. I have about 2" of push and pull on the steering wheel. There is something obviously missing from the part shown in the pic. I'm not sure what happened or even what the problem is. Can someone help me with this one? My truck is a 72 chevy cheyenne swb.

It looks like all the balls of the bearing fell out to me. There is no way to lube these bearings except at installation and it is common to dry out, wear down and fall out.

There is no bearing preload spring either
